The northeastern state of Assam has a plethora of art and craft traditions, the most well-known of which include Muga silk saris, bamboo and cane products, and the masks of Majuli Island. But did you know that the state is also home to a brass metal industry that produces high-quality utensils and other items? Welcome to Sarthebari.

The town of Sarthebari in the easternmost corner of the Barpeta district is the hub of Assam’s brass metal industry. A large number of households practice the metal craft, which received a geographical indication (GI) tag by the government of India in 2024, to produce items like botas (trays), ban-batis (bowls), plates, glasses, etc., that can be found in most homes across the state.

Arguably the most recognisable product made of bell metal—an alloy consisting of bronze with a high tin content—is the xorai. This is an offering tray with a stand at the bottom that comes with or without a cover on top.

Xorais are used to offer tamul paan, a stimulant which is served to guests as a sign of welcome and thanks. The utensil is also used to offer prasad (food offering to the gods) and other items. Xorais can also be used as decorative pieces and as gifts.

Besides Sarthebari, artisans from Hajo are also engaged in producing traditional bell metal and brass articles. They employ innovative skills to design modern-day products that suit the changing tastes of today's consumers. However, due to the increasing cost of raw materials that have to be imported from other states, Sarthebari's artisans are finding it economically difficult to continue the industry.
