Rajasthan’s Piplantri is no ordinary village. Located in Rajsamand district, it has garnered global attention for its remarkable initiative of planting 111 trees for every girl child born. The story of Piplantri’s transformation dates back to 2006, when the then village sarpanch, Shyam Sundar Paliwal, initiated this practice in memory of his daughter Kiran, who had passed away at a young age. What began as a tribute soon evolved into a community-wide movement aimed at addressing two pressing issues—gender discrimination and environmental degradation. Every time a girl is born in Piplantri, villagers come together to plant 111 trees in her honour. The choice of trees includes neem, sheesham, mango, and other fruit-bearing species that enhance the village’s green cover and provide long-term economic benefits. These trees are nurtured with care, ensuring they thrive alongside the girl they were planted for.
However, the initiative doesn’t stop at tree plantations. The family of the newborn signs an affidavit committing to educate their daughter, prohibit child marriage, and protect the trees planted in her name.
What makes Piplantri’s initiative so unique is its holistic approach. The village has successfully created a self-sustaining ecosystem where social and environmental progress go hand in hand. The planted trees prevent soil erosion, improve groundwater levels, and contribute to biodiversity conservation. The villagers also practice organic farming, using aloe vera extensively, which has become a major income source.
