Gajlaxmi Palace
Less than two hours&rsquo drive from Cuttack will take you to this palace belonging to the rulers of the erstwhile Dhenkanal province. This elegant and luxurious homestay has been getting good reviews from visitors. Two rooms of the palace are now let out for guests while meals are served in the royal dining room. The palace overlooks the forest and the management can help you to explore the forest trails or visit the waterhole. You can also visit some of the old temples nearby, buy local handicrafts and learn about the tribes who live here. The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar, 80km away.

Dalijoda Palace
Located nearly 22km from Cuttack, the Kila Dalijoda belongs to the rulers of Panchakote. Originally built has a hunting resort, today a part of it has been converted into a heritage homestay. The royal family also stays here. &nbspBuilt in 1931-33, the fort&mdashmade of laterite stone&mdashis an example of Gothic architecture. The forest surrounding the palace is now part of the Kapilas Elephant Sanctuary. The palace offers one double-bed suite, one triple-bedded suite and one roof top double bedded suite. The kitchen dishes out vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes but tradition bars the cooking and serving of chicken. You can get quail instead.

Palace Dhenkanal
Located in Dhenkanal town, this former palace is now a plush homestay. The 150-year old palace is spread over a large area and is lovingly maintained. You will find royal memorabilia displayed in many of the rooms. Apart from enjoying a luxurious holiday, you can also visit some of the scenic destinations in the region.

Aul Palace
Located adjacent to Aul town in Kendrapara district, the palace still contains many of its old features&mdashsuch as temples, the royal homes (rajbati, ranimahal, etc) ghodashala (stable) etc. Some of the palace rooms have been converted to guest rooms. The palace overlooks the Kharasrota River. Aul is about 100km from Cuttack, the nearest railhead.

Fort Mahodadhi
This former royal retreat&mdashon the Puri Beach Road&mdashhas now been converted into a heritage resort by Kamat Hotels. The hotel is set back from the main road by a spacious garden. Apart from rooms in the main building, there are also wooden cottages and villas enclosed within the garden. You can dine at the ethnic village-themed restaurant or at the Mostly Grills restaurant or at the Vithal Kamat (vegetarian) restaurant. Watch the sun go down in the sea from The Baron Bar located on the terrace.      

Information The best time to visit Odisha is from December to March. It is advisable to check with the palaces about availability of rooms and facilities before planning.
