The quaint and beautiful Churchill in Manitoba, is an ideal place to witness the Northern Lights in Canada. Embraced by the Auroral Oval, this town boasts over 300 nights of aurora activity yearly. The best displays usually happen in winter, particularly in February and March, when the skies are most clear.

For the optimal experience, aim for moonless nights with minimal light pollution. Churchill offers various tours and accommodations for prime viewing of this phenomenon.

Beyond being a Northern Lights hub, Churchill is famed as the world's polar bear capital. It is also a hotspot for witnessing the largest beluga whale migration globally. During the peak season, pods of playful belugas navigate the Churchill River estuary.

It is also known as the “accessible Arctic” because it is on the southwestern shore of Hudson Bay, reachable by plane or train. Travelling by plane provides views of Hudson Bay's rocky coast, while the train journey reveals the changing landscape from boreal forest to permafrost and tundra. Despite its arctic terrain, Churchill thrives with life. It hosts 500 wildflowers and boreal plants, over 225 bird species, and more than 300 nights of Northern Lights. And of course, the polar bears and belugas.

From a peak of around 5,000 residents during its military base era during the Cold War, Churchill now houses about 800-900 people year-round. Their lifestyle is challenging and can be uncertain. It is partly balanced by tourism revenue from visitors who come for the Northern Lights in winter, paddling among numerous belugas in summer, and exploring the polar bear capital in October and November.

Where To Stay?

To get the best view of the Northern Lights in Churchill, you can opt for accommodations like the Tundra Inn, which presents a familial retreat. The Churchill Northern Studies Centre is another option. Besides being a research centre, the facility offers Aurora viewing and educational opportunities. The Lazy Bear Lodge, built from local logs, also provides an immersive experience away from town lights.
