Mizoram is moving ahead with a number of ropeway projects as part of the Parvatmala Pariyojana, with the twin aim of improving connectivity in its hill terrain and drawing more visitors. One of the headline projects is a INR 34.50 crore ropeway at Vantawng Falls, the state’s tallest waterfall and among its best-known natural sites.

About The Project

The falls are located near Thenzawl in Serchhip district. The project will give visitors a bird’s-eye view of Vantawng Falls, offering a new perspective of the state’s tallest cascade, an official said on March 19. It is set to be funded under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme.

Located roughly 92 km from Aizawl, Vantawng Falls is among the state’s most visited natural attractions, drawing tourists year-round. The proposed ropeway is expected to improve access to the site while offering a more engaging way to experience the surrounding landscape.

The next step—appointing a contractor to execute the work—is still pending. Officials and local stakeholders say the development could provide a boost to tourism in and around Thenzawl, while also opening up employment opportunities for people in nearby areas.

In Aizawl, where narrow roads and steep slopes often lead to traffic build-up, a ropeway is being looked at as a possible alternative. One idea under study is a link to Lengpui, with a feasibility assessment currently examining whether such a route could work for regular urban travel.

The proposed system is being developed with the involvement of National Highways Logistics Management Limited and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. If it goes ahead, the project could receive financial backing from the Asian Development Bank.

Beyond improving connectivity between key points, the broader aim is to tackle traffic bottlenecks and offer a more practical transport option in Mizoram’s difficult, hilly terrain.

Vantawng Falls, also known locally as Vantawng Khawhthla, is the tallest and arguably most striking waterfall in Mizoram. Set about 5 km south of Thenzawl in Serchhip district, the falls plunge roughly 750 feet (229 metres) in two distinct tiers, cutting through dense, forested hills. The cascade takes its name from Vantawnga, a figure in local lore known for his skill as a swimmer.

For most visitors, the experience is from a distance rather than up close. A viewing tower has been built to give a safe, elevated look at the waterfall and the forested hills around it. Getting down to the base is not really practical, as the terrain is steep and covered in thick forest, so the main attraction remains the view from above.

The months between October and March are generally considered the best time to visit, when the skies are clearer and visibility is at its best. During the monsoon, from June to September, the waterfall is at its most powerful, though travel can be more difficult given road conditions.
