Visa Applications Go Online
The October 1 change covers the Transit Visa and a broad selection of Visitor Visa categories. These include the standard Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa and Group Visitor Visa, including those under Approved Destination Status (ADS).
Several specialised categories are also included. These cover Academic Visitor, Adoption Visitor, Adoption Pre-citizenship Visitor, Antarctic Traveller, Arts and Music Festival, Culturally Arranged Marriage and Crew Joining a Ship or Plane visitor visas.
The list extends to Dismissed Worker, Escort of Medical Patients, German Law Student, Guardian, Medical Treatment and Occupational Registration visitor visas. Parent and Grandparent, Pitcairn Islander, Private Yacht or Plane, Short-term Entertainment Act, Sports Events, Super Yachts, Tour Escort and Visiting Media visitor visas will also move to the online system.
For travellers, the practical change is fairly straightforward. If your visa falls into one of these categories, you will need to use enhanced Immigration Online when submitting a new application from October 1.
Easier Tracking
Immigration New Zealand says the digital process is intended to reduce some of the paperwork involved in visa applications while giving applicants greater visibility over their applications.
Supporting documents can be uploaded online, while applicants can receive updates and track the progress of their applications. The system also provides guidance within the application process, with questions designed to reflect an applicant’s individual circumstances.
There are other changes happening behind the scenes, too. Features such as automatic passport information capture through an Identity Document Reader are intended to reduce manual data-entry errors. The system can also help applicants submit more complete information at the outset, potentially cutting down on avoidable delays.
For anyone preparing a New Zealand holiday, the main takeaway is to check the relevant visa category before starting an application and have digital copies of the required documents ready. Immigration New Zealand also advises applicants to apply early, particularly when demand is high.
Paper Forms Remain
The move does not affect applications that have already been submitted. If a paper application for one of the affected visa categories reaches Immigration New Zealand before October 1, 2026, it will continue to be processed under the existing system. Applicants do not need to submit another application.
After October 1, paper applications for the affected categories will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. Applicants who believe they have a valid reason for using a paper form will need to contact Immigration New Zealand and discuss their circumstances.
Importantly, not every visitor visa is included in the change. Paper applications will continue to be accepted through existing channels for categories such as Partner and Child of Military Visitor Visas, Partner and Child of Student Visitor Visas, Partner and Child of Worker Visitor Visas and Partner and Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visas.
The Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa, Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa and Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa are also outside the October change. Immigration New Zealand has indicated that paper applications for these categories could be phased out in the future, but there is no immediate change.
The latest update is part of New Zealand's broader shift towards digital immigration services.
