For travellers who spent much of the summer rearranging itineraries around Air India’s reduced schedule, there is some welcome news. The airline is set to restore most of its suspended international flights from September 1, bringing back services that were cut during the peak of the fuel crisis and adding more frequencies on several key routes later this year.

The restoration follows a turbulent few months for the airline. Between June and August, Air India reduced its international operations amid a combination of soaring jet fuel prices and continued airspace restrictions over certain regions. The cuts removed 145 international flights from the weekly schedule, affecting connections across North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, SAARC countries, and the Far East.

Routes Return Soon

Several prominent long-haul services were among those affected. Temporary suspensions included Delhi-Chicago, Delhi-Newark, and Mumbai-New York, while services to destinations such as Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Vienna, Zurich, Rome, and London were also reduced. The changes meant fewer options for travellers flying between India and some of its most popular international destinations.

The airline also scaled back its network across Asia, withdrawing 82 weekly flights to destinations including Kathmandu, Dhaka, Colombo, Bangkok, Shanghai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City. Air India had previously said that the reductions were necessary as elevated fuel costs put pressure on its operations, while demand and operating conditions continued to be assessed.

The impact was not limited to international travel. Air India also reduced its domestic schedule during July and August, with reports indicating that domestic operations were cut by around 20 to 22 per cent. With roughly 3,600 domestic flights operating each week, the reduction represented more than 790 weekly services at the higher end of that range.

More Flights Ahead

The airline now expects most of the international services reduced during July and August to return from September 1. The move will take Air India closer to its regular schedule and give passengers more choice as the autumn travel season gets underway.

There is more to the expansion than simply restoring suspended routes. Air India plans to increase frequencies on several international services during the winter schedule, which begins towards the end of October. Milan, Frankfurt, Zurich, Vienna, Melbourne, Tokyo, and New York are among the destinations that will receive additional flights.

The airline will also introduce a new seasonal service between Mumbai and Toronto. For travellers heading to Canada, the new connection will add another option at a time when international capacity on India-Canada routes remains an important consideration for both leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives travel.

The changes mark a significant shift from the operational constraints Air India faced earlier this year. Fuel prices surged following the escalation of conflict in West Asia, while airspace restrictions added another layer of complexity to international operations. The combination forced airlines to reassess routes, aircraft deployment and schedules across several markets.

Air India had announced in May that it would maintain more than 1,200 international flights despite the reductions. Its network at the time included 33 weekly services to North America, 47 to Europe, 57 to the UK and eight to Australia. It was also operating 158 weekly flights across the Far East, Southeast Asia and SAARC markets, along with seven weekly services to Mauritius.

The airline's latest schedule changes suggest that conditions have become more manageable, although fuel prices remain volatile and higher than before the West Asia conflict. For passengers, the immediate takeaway is simpler: many of the connections that disappeared from booking calendars this summer are expected to return from September 1, followed by further capacity additions during the winter season.

For travellers planning international holidays, business trips or long-haul journeys towards the end of 2026, that should translate into more departure choices and potentially greater flexibility when planning flights. After a summer defined by cancellations and schedule adjustments, Air India's network is preparing to take off at a fuller pace once again.
