This park is a vital hub for biodiversity conservation and is celebrated as a priceless natural asset. Visitors are drawn to its stunning landscapes, fresh and pure air, and the diverse ecosystems it supports. The park’s vegetation ranges from dry mixed forests to moist forests, creating a unique environment that nurtures a wide variety of wildlife. It is also home to the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, which a huge percentage of the bird species found across Maharashtra. Every winter, flocks of migratory birds flock to Navegaon Lake, adding to the park’s vibrant avian diversity. While Navegaon is widely known as a bird sanctuary, its vertebrate fauna is equally impressive. Home to more than 200 bird species, the park also shelters many species of mammals and reptiles, including iconic animals like tigers, panthers, jungle cats, sloth bears, wolves, jackals, gaurs, sambars, chitals, and langurs. Visitors can enjoy jungle safaris and forest trails, offering thrilling encounters with wildlife.

Culture And Wildlife In Harmony

At the heart of the park lies Navegaon Lake, covering 11 square kilometers. Steeped in local legend, the lake is believed to have been constructed in the eighteenth century by a figure known as Kolu Patel Koli, later revered as Kolasur Deo. A statue of this mythical figure stands atop a peak overlooking the lake, symbolising the region’s rich cultural heritage. The name 'Navegaon' comes from the Marathi words Nave (new) and Gaon (village). Locally, the area is also called Navegaon Bandh (“bandh” meaning dam) because of the prominent water body. Predominantly inhabited by tribal communities, this region was once under the rule of the Gond kings. The park enhances visitor experience with an interpretation center, a small museum, and a library, alongside seven watch cabins and five towers designed for wildlife observation and photography. Together, these features make Navegaon National Park an extraordinary destination where nature and culture beautifully intertwine.
