Gorakhgad Fort | Maharashtra is home to over 390 forts, many of which possess a rich military history. Thane district, located in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, is an integral part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Although it is not part of Mumbai, Thane is geographically and functionally connected to the city. The district features a variety of forts, each with its own unique history and architectural style. These forts serve as significant landmarks, providing insights into the region's past and its rich cultural heritage. Among them is Gorakhgad Fort, widely credited as the most difficult fort to trek in Maharashtra.

History Of The Gorakhgad Fort

The fort is named after Saint Gorakhnath, a yogi who is believed to have meditated in the caves located within it. These caves and the surrounding areas have been used by sadhus and local villagers for meditation and spiritual practices.

The fort was built during the Satavahana period, estimated to be around 5,000 years ago, and later served as a stopover point for Shivaji Maharaj. Although it is not known for elaborate architectural structures, its strategic location and natural defences make it an intriguing historical site.

The ancient trade route connecting Junnar and Naneghat was a major artery linking the Konkan coast with the Deccan plateau, protected by forts such as Gorakhgad. This fort in particular was believed to be strategically positioned as it provided protection and control over the area. The fort also served as a key stopover and defensive stronghold during the reigns of Shahaji Raje and Shivaji.

This route was essential for exchanging goods between the coastal and inland regions during the Satavahana period (approximately 200 BCE – 190 CE). In fact, the Marathas constructed several magnificent forts (such as this one), mostly in the Deccan Plateau. Several of these forts were nominated for inclusion under 'Maratha Military Landscapes' in the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2024-25.

Some sections, particularly the final ascent to the summit, can be quite challenging, necessitating careful planning and preparation.
