Besides its temples and beaches, Tamil Nadu offers scenic trekking trails, especially during the monsoon. As the rains transform the state’s rugged hills and forested slopes into verdant wonderlands, these trails come alive with waterfalls, misty peaks, and wild blooms from late June to September. Here are five monsoon treks in Tamil Nadu that promise adventure, serenity, and soul-stirring views.
Known as the "Mountains of Death" for its 70 hairpin bends, Kolli Hills is a trekkers’ favourite during the monsoon. The highlight is the trek to Agaya Gangai Waterfalls, a thunderous 300-foot cascade deep in the forest. The trail includes climbing over 1,000 stone steps, surrounded by shola vegetation and lively streams. The region is also steeped in folklore and is home to the ancient Arappaleeswarar Temple.
Trek duration: 2 days
Though Meesapulimala’s peak lies in Kerala, the trail starting near Kodaikanal and Kolukkumalai is popular among Tamil Nadu trekkers. At 8,661 feet, it’s the second-highest peak in South India. The monsoon paints the hills emerald green and cloaks the ridges in mist. Trekking here feels like walking above the clouds, with the occasional sambar deer or Nilgiri tahr sighting adding to the magic.
Trek duration: 1 day
Located about 20 km from Kodaikanal, Perumal Peak stands at about 8,005 feet and offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats. The trail is moderate and suitable for beginners. During the monsoon, the trail is lined with wildflowers, and the summit offers cloud-kissed vistas of the valleys below. The area is part of the Perumalmalai Hills, popular among nature lovers and amateur photographers.
Trek duration: Half-day to full-day
Located about 4-5 hours from Chennai (via road), Yelagiri is a monsoon gem that doesn’t demand high endurance. The Swamimalai Trek is the most popular, leading you to the highest point in Yelagiri. The gentle slopes, monsoon mist, and chirping birds make this an ideal trek for families and beginners. Don’t miss the nearby Jalagamparai Waterfalls that come alive during the rain.
Trek duration: 1 day
A lesser-known but beautiful trail near Coimbatore, the Thadagam Valley trek takes you through dense forest paths. During the monsoon, the valley transforms into a lush carpet, attracting various butterflies and birds. The region is also home to tribal communities and eco-awareness groups that occasionally offer guided treks focused on conservation.
