At an elevation of 1,041 metres above sea level, the town and its surroundings offer stunning landscapes rich in biodiversity. Here's a guide to things to do in Ella.

Hike To Ella Rock

Ella Rock is located about 10 km from the town of Ella. The steep ascent is through forest trails, so there is plenty of shade. It normally takes 2-4 hours to climb, depending on your fitness level and climbing experience. The trail is steep and rocky in places, and could be difficult for beginners. Bring along plenty of water, a hat, and a decent pair of hiking shoes.

The island nation is the fourth-largest tea producer in the world, thanks to its world-famous tea business, which was introduced by the British in the 19th century. Tea plantations have changed the economy and culture by creating jobs, supporting rural expansion, and conserving the country's natural beauty. They embody Sri Lanka's perseverance and craftsmanship, taking guests on an amazing trip into the world of tea. Go on a tea tour at plantations nestled amidst the rolling hills of Ella. Witness the art of tea manufacturing up close, take a guided tour, and join tea leaf picking at the colonial-era estates.

A Train Journey And A Bridge

Take the Ella to Kandy train that will take you past breathtaking waterfalls, through lush green hills, and tea plantations. And on the Nine Arches Bridge. The stunning viaduct bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. Most trains offer first-class observation cars with air conditioning, while some provide sleeping berths and reserved seats for added comfort. For the best views when departing from Kandy, sit on the right side of the train.

Explore Waterfalls

Diyaluma Falls, at an elevation of 720 feet, is Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall. The word diyalumam or diya haluma, means "rapid flow of water" in Sinhalese. You can do this as a day trip from Ella, it is about a two-hour ride away through tea plantations, followed by a short walk downhill.

Ella Gap

Ella Gap is a scenic spot nestled between the hills. Its location affords excellent views of the valleys here, as well as views across Sri Lanka's southern plains. On a clear morning, you can even see the lighthouses down the southern shore. It is a picturesque spot that is popular with both tourists and locals, especially for photography.

When To Go

The climate most of the year is pleasant, though the sunlight can get quite strong in the daytime. Surrounded by cloud forests, mist-covered hills, and tea plantations on slopes, the area has a cooler climate than the neighbouring plains. It tends to rain from time to time, and quite a bit in December. So bring along some rain gear.
