Deciding where to stay during a holiday, choosing sustainable transport, and planning journeys that have minimal impact on landscapes have always been important decisions. However, a changing climate makes these choices even more critical. In India, many organisations are making everyday sustainability easier by implementing initiatives that promote environmentally responsible practices, such as waste reduction and sustainable consumption. On Earth Day 2025, here are five green initiatives that are making everyday sustainability more accessible.

Eco Genie

How many times have you wanted to recycle your waste, only to find it challenging to get the necessary information? Soon, you'll be able to access this through an information directory. Content strategist Gitanjali Chandrasekharan has always been passionate about sustainable living and waste management. During a trip to the Andaman Islands, she witnessed the negative impacts of development, including increased demand for electricity and water and growing amounts of trash. Recognising her role in this demand, she wanted to be part of a solution. How can recycling be as reliable and easy as overnight delivery? After much consideration, she launched Eco Genie, a much-needed green-service discovery platform. This directory offers information on recycling, trash pickup, and other green logistics services in your area. Currently in its first stage, Gitanjali will be posting all available services on Instagram and Facebook. If you provide a green service, feel free to send her a direct message or leave a comment, and she’ll get in touch. She would love to hear from you if you rely on a green service!

Sheikh Yameen and Zubair Ahmed Bhat launched an e-bike rental service in 2022 as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transportation in Srinagar. For Yameen and Bhat, climate change is not an abstract issue but a daily reality. The roads became congested, and air pollution worsened, leading to discomfort and inconvenience for locals and tourists. With the easing of Covid restrictions, they had become concerned about the influx of travellers to the Valley, which has significant environmental consequences. The increasing number of tourists, coupled with existing ecological challenges, put a strain on the Valley’s fragile ecosystem. It was during this time that the idea of micro-mobility came to them. Chhattisgarh is home to approximately 44 per cent of its geographical area covered by forests. Often, concerns about safety and the sensitivity of specific regions often make tourists hesitant about their travel plans to this region. For Bhagyesh Dubey of Agora Eco Tourism, the real challenge lies in building trust with the locals, who are essential stakeholders in the tourism experience. Agora Eco Tourism is an experiential travel firm that won the Gold Award for Sustainable Leadership in the Travel Enterprise Category at the Indian Responsible Tourism Summit & Awards 2025. The company focuses on introducing tourists to the tribal way of life while preserving the integrity of these untouched areas. By curating experiences that showcase agriculture, scenic landscapes, and tribal lifestyles, Agora believes that connecting with local culture is the best way to travel. Locals play a vital role as facilitators, sharing their extensive knowledge of the region with the Agora team. The goal is to allow visitors to experience the beauty of community living and understand how life can thrive even with limited resources and amenities. Read more about it here.

Daily Dump

Founded in April 2006, Daily Dump aims to change citizens' mindsets about waste management in urban areas. As a design-led brand, it is a pioneer in developing products and services for decentralised waste management at home, in communities, offices, and public spaces. Their range of segregation products, which includes composters, informative books, and various services, reflects their mission to promote sustainable waste management. One of their flagship products is a tall, cylindrical composter made of terracotta, which has made home composting an appealing choice. This composter not only reduces the burden on public agencies responsible for garbage disposal but also decreases methane gas emissions. Daily Dump has even successfully encouraged entire apartment communities to adopt composting with their Gaia composters, allowing residents to manage all types of waste within their neighborhoods and maintain a clean and sustainable environment without sending a single bag of waste outside.
