If you’re planning a spring getaway, here are some of the best places to witness this seasonal magic.
April is the prime time to witness spectacular rhododendron blooms on the Goechala Trek in Sikkim, with forests turning vibrant shades of red, pink, and white between 9,000 and 11,000 feet. The trail from Bakhim to Tshoka and Phedang transforms into a stunning floral corridor, offering a rare, picturesque hiking experience. The trek starts in Yuksom and passes through these dense alpine jungles, making it one of the top rhododendron treks in India.
Ideal Time: The best time to see the rhododendrons in full bloom is from early April through the end of the month, extending into early May.
Best Sections: The trail between Bakhim to Tshoka, and Tshoka to Phedang offers the most vibrant, dense blooming rhododendron forests. You will see a mix of pink and red Rhododendron arboreum at lower altitudes and delicate white or pale pink species higher up, especially around Tshoka and Phedang. Along with rhododendrons, the trail is also filled with magnolias, creating a diverse and colorful landscape.
Weather: April offers pleasant spring weather with clearer views of the Kanchenjunga mountain, though higher areas can still experience cold nights and occasional, late-season snow, offering a mix of flowers and white landscapes.

Seeing rhododendrons in Tawang during April is a spectacular experience, as the region transforms into a vibrant floral paradise with red, pink, white, and yellow flowers in full bloom. April is one of the best times to witness this, as the winter snow melts and makes way for the spring flowers, blanketing the valleys and hillsides. Tawang holds a huge variety of rhododendron species, ranging from bushes to trees, with some flowers being medicinal and edible. This period is ideal for seeing the flowers alongside the local Tibetan Buddhist culture, with rhododendrons often decorating the surroundings of the monasteries.
Best Locations: The route to Tawang, particularly the area around Sela Pass (13,700 ft) and the nearby lakes (like PT Tso), is covered with rhododendron forests that bloom in various hues. Located in the Yumthang Valley, the sanctuary features over 40 species of rhododendrons blooming in red, pink, white, and purple, alongside snow-capped mountain views, making it a must-visit in early to late April.
Ideal Time: Late April to mid-May is ideal to see the colors at their best, although blooming continues until June. The sanctuary is in full bloom, with rhododendrons (locally called Guras) covering the valley.
Aside from rhododendrons, visitors can spot other alpine flowers like Primulas and Saxifrages, alongside bird species such as the wood snipe.
