A night in prison is hardly what most travellers would put on their holiday itinerary. Yet, on the western coast of Latvia, a former military prison has turned the idea of spending a night behind bars into an unusual accommodation experience. At Karosta Prison in Liepāja, visitors can exchange conventional hotel rooms for former prison cells, sleep on wooden beds, explore corridors that have witnessed more than a century of military history, and, for those willing to take things further, experience a simulated prisoner routine. Part museum, part historical attraction, and part unconventional hotel, the establishment offers an unusual way to encounter Latvia’s past. Guests can even choose how authentic they want their stay to be, from a basic overnight booking to an immersive experience involving mock interrogations and prison guards.
