For nearly a century, mules hauled cargo along the banks of Maryland’s Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, pulling boats loaded with coal, timber, and other goods towards the Potomac River. Today, the boats are gone, the locks have fallen silent and the towpath has become a popular route for hikers and cyclists. But traces of the canal’s working life remain, including a collection of historic lockhouses where travellers can spend the night.
