At about 817 km by road, Varanasi is the longest journey on this list, but an overnight bus makes it possible to arrive in the morning and step almost immediately into one of India's most atmospheric cities. The ghats are the obvious draw, from the evening ceremony at Dashashwamedh to the more relaxed atmosphere around Assi Ghat, but the real pleasure is wandering through the narrow lanes between them. Take a boat on the Ganga at sunrise, seek out the city's silk workshops, eat kachori-sabzi and jalebi, and leave room for a thandai or a plate of Banarasi chaat. Just 10 km away, Sarnath offers a dramatically different historical experience as the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment, while the Ashokan lion capital found here became the basis of India's national emblem. Varanasi's history also stretches beyond pilgrimage, with centuries of associations with Sanskrit, music, philosophy, literature, silk weaving and learning; figures such as Ravi Shankar, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Tulsidas are all part of its cultural history.
