Bhutan scored 89.44 on the index, making it the quietest country in the world for 2026. The Himalayan kingdom has more than 39,000 square kilometres of forested mountains and valleys, providing ample open, natural spaces.

The country also limits tourism through its sustainable development fee, which helps manage visitor numbers while supporting conservation and local communities.

Namibia takes second place with a score of 86.69. With just 3.83 residents and 0.67 tourists per square kilometre, the country has some of the lowest population and tourist densities on the list. Its vast desert landscapes also make it a natural choice for travellers looking for solitude. Namibia is home to the Namib Desert, considered one of the oldest deserts in the world.

How Was The Ranking Decided?

The Noise-Free Nations Index gave each country a score between 0 and 100 across seven indicators. These were population density, tourist density, rural land coverage, protected land, motor vehicle density, airport density and train line density.

The individual scores were then combined to create an overall Quiet Score. Countries with fewer people, tourists and vehicles, along with larger areas of natural and protected land, scored higher.

Interestingly, no European country made it into the top 25. Estonia is the highest-ranked European country, at 34th place, followed by Finland at 39th and Sweden at 40th.

Singapore Ranks As The Noisiest Country

The index also looked at the other end of the scale. Singapore recorded the lowest Quiet Score at 6.78, followed by the Maldives at 8.48 and Barbados at 10.12. Qatar and Lebanon rounded out the bottom five with scores of 15.45 and 18.13, respectively.

The ranking comes at a time when more travellers are looking for quieter experiences and destinations away from crowded tourist hotspots. From Bhutan’s mountain valleys to Namibia’s vast desert landscapes, these countries offer ample space to slow down and experience a different side of travel.
