India's tourism promotion strategy is taking to the skies in a bigger way. Just days after Air India partnered with the Ministry of Tourism under the Incredible India banner, IndiGo has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government to launch a global campaign designed to inspire more international travellers to choose India.

The collaboration, titled 'Incredible India by IndiGo', brings together the country's largest airline by market share and the Ministry of Tourism in a two-year, non-exclusive and non-financial partnership aimed at strengthening India's visibility across key international markets. While the Ministry contributes its established Incredible India branding and destination assets, IndiGo will leverage its extensive network and customer touchpoints to tell India's tourism story to millions of travellers across the world.

The move reflects a broader shift in the government's tourism strategy. Instead of relying solely on traditional destination marketing, it is increasingly tapping airlines with strong international footprints to position India as a year-round destination for leisure, culture, wellness, spirituality, wildlife and business travel.

A Wider Reach

Signed in New Delhi on July 30, the agreement will see the Ministry of Tourism and IndiGo jointly roll out destination-led campaigns across a wide range of platforms. Travellers can expect to see India promoted through digital and print media, airport branding, in-flight platforms, social media campaigns and international travel exhibitions, alongside destination-focused storytelling across IndiGo's own customer engagement channels.

The airline will develop content showcasing destinations across the country, highlighting everything from India's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and natural landscapes to spiritual circuits, adventure experiences, wellness retreats and wildlife reserves. The Ministry, in turn, will provide access to the Incredible India brand, promotional content and coordination support with relevant tourism stakeholders wherever required.

With IndiGo operating one of the country's largest domestic and international networks, the campaign is expected to reach travellers across South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and several emerging international markets where the airline has steadily expanded its presence. By integrating tourism messaging into booking platforms, airports and onboard experiences, the partnership aims to place Indian destinations in front of travellers at multiple stages of their journey planning.

Tourism Strategy

The IndiGo partnership follows closely on the heels of a similar agreement signed between the Ministry of Tourism and Air India earlier this week. Together, the two collaborations signal a coordinated effort to amplify India's tourism messaging through airlines that cater to different traveller segments and route networks.

While Air India's growing long-haul operations provide access to key markets in Europe, North America and Australia, IndiGo brings unmatched scale across short and medium-haul routes, connecting India with neighbouring countries and regional travel hubs. The Ministry's decision to work with both carriers under non-exclusive agreements allows it to maximise visibility without restricting future partnerships with other airlines or travel stakeholders.

The latest initiative also comes at a time when India is working to strengthen its position as a global tourism destination beyond its traditional image. Alongside heritage monuments and cultural attractions, recent tourism campaigns have increasingly highlighted wellness, culinary experiences, nature-based travel, adventure tourism and contemporary urban experiences, reflecting changing traveller preferences.

Beyond Heritage

The campaign also seeks to present a broader narrative of modern India, one that combines centuries-old traditions with innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity. Rather than focusing exclusively on iconic landmarks, the initiative aims to showcase the country's evolving identity alongside its cultural legacy, encouraging international visitors to explore lesser-known destinations and diverse regional experiences.

The Memorandum of Understanding will remain valid for an initial period of two years, during which both organisations are expected to collaborate on destination-specific campaigns and tourism promotion activities across domestic and international markets.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism and representatives from IndiGo. As global travel continues to recover and competition among destinations intensifies, India's latest airline partnerships indicate a more integrated approach to tourism marketing, one that combines aviation, storytelling and destination promotion to attract a wider international audience.
