France’s First Traditional Hindu Temple To Open Near Paris This September

Bussy-Saint-Georges, in the eastern suburbs of Paris, is set to become the site of France’s first purpose-built Hindu temple constructed according to traditional Hindu architectural principles. The BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir will be inaugurated in September 2026, with the opening marked by the 13-day Festival of Culture from September 2 to 14.

The inauguration will bring a series of Hindu religious ceremonies and cultural programmes to Bussy-Saint-Georges and Paris. These include a Jal Yatra on the River Seine, a Nagar Yatra through the local community, a Vedic Mahayagna, the temple’s Murti Pratishtha ceremony and a concluding Hindu Cultural Celebration. Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS, will be present for the celebrations.

A Traditional Mandir In The Paris Suburbs

The BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir is being built with stone brought from India and incorporates elements of traditional Hindu temple architecture, including shikhars, domes, columns, canopies and carved windows. According to BAPS, the stones were prepared in India using traditional techniques, with Indian artisans working alongside French stone masons during construction. The project brings together Indian craftsmanship and French engineering.

The temple is part of the Esplanade des Religions et des Cultures in Bussy-Saint-Georges, an area designed to bring different religious communities together. Beyond its shrines, the mandir will include an assembly hall, seminar and classroom spaces, an exhibition area, a multi-purpose sports hall, a café, a gift shop and gardens. BAPS says the site will function as a cultural and community centre alongside its role as a place of worship.

Ahead of the inauguration, rituals associated with the completion of the temple have already taken place, including the Kalash and Dhaja Dand Pujans atop its shikhars and central dome. Vedic chants and prayers were offered for peace, harmony and the wellbeing of communities in the surrounding area.

What To Expect During The 13-Day Festival

The Festival of Culture begins on September 2 with the Vedic Mahayagna and a Palkhi Yatra. The mahayagna will continue through September 13, with multiple sessions scheduled on several days. On September 3, the programme moves to the River Seine for the Jal Yatra, a boat procession celebrating Indian culture and the inauguration of the temple. The procession can be viewed from the riverbank without a ticket, while participation on the boats requires registration.

The programme continues with a Krishna Janmashtami celebration on September 4 and a Nagar Yatra on September 5. September 6 is the central day of the inauguration, with the Murti Pratishtha ceremony and Mandir Dedication Assembly. The following days feature a Women’s Convention, Kirtan Aradhana, Gratitude and Satsang Assemblies, a Volunteer Assembly and the Europe Satsang Summit.

The final stretch of the festival includes a Community Yatra and Mahant Swami Maharaj’s Janma Jayanti celebrations on September 13, followed by a Hindu Cultural Celebration on September 14.

A Cultural Event Beyond The Temple

Several of the festival’s events will extend beyond the mandir itself, making the inauguration relevant to visitors interested in Indian culture as well as those attending for religious reasons. The temple’s opening also reflects the presence of a longstanding Hindu and Indian diaspora in France and the wider cultural relationship between India and France.

The mandir is intended to encourage cultural exchange, education, community engagement and dialogue between people of different backgrounds. With its inauguration programme combining religious ceremonies, processions, music and cultural gatherings, the September festival will introduce the new mandir not simply as a place of worship, but as a new cultural institution in the Paris region.
