The Hornbill Festival, held annually in Nagaland from December 1–10, stands as a vibrant celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the state’s 16 major Naga tribes. Organised by the Government of Nagaland, the event takes place at the picturesque Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, where traditional music, dance, crafts, indigenous sports, and local cuisine come together to create a dynamic cultural showcase. Integral to the celebrations is the Hornbill Festival music fest, which features nightly rock concerts and a diverse array of musical acts that run parallel to the main cultural event.
With its renowned “Battle of the Bands” competition and performances by both international and local artistes, the Hornbill music fest highlights a wide spectrum of genres, complementing the traditional Naga folk music displayed during the day. Building on this musical legacy, the Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA) Nagaland has announced the first line-up for the iconic Toyota Hornbill Music Festival 2025—India’s largest music festival—which will run each evening from 5 pm at the Main Arena, Naga Heritage Village.
In an update issued on Saturday, TaFMA chairman Theja Meru announced that the 2025 edition will showcase a vibrant mix of bands and artistes from Ireland, Scotland, South Korea, Israel, Nepal, Japan, and India, alongside a strong representation of local Naga performers and the winners of Ticket to Hornbill, India’s Biggest Band Battle 2025. A major highlight of this year’s programme will be the return of the world-renowned Japanese drumming ensemble Drum Tao, invited back by popular demand following last year’s phenomenal success.
The first international line-up includes: Rumac (Scotland), Drum Tao (Japan), Japan Junior Orchestra (Japan), Agniva (France), BoINN – Friends of the Mary Wallopers (Ireland), Mongdoll (South Korea), Yekumi (Israel), Space (Nepal), DJ Angy-Z (Russia), and Roots Zombie (France). These global acts will share the stage with Indian and Naga favourites, bringing an impressive range of musical genres to Kisama Heritage Village.
Reiterating the festival’s core vision, Meru emphasised that the Hornbill Music Festival remains deeply committed to promoting independent musicians and providing them with a major platform. “While we receive many requests to bring in big international acts, our focus remains on local and deserving indie artistes who often don’t get access to major stages,” he said.
The 2025 line-up reflects this commitment, featuring a diverse pool of Indian and Naga talent: The Fantastic Company, Novo, Trance Effect, Lateral Move, Street Stories, Wishes and Dreams, Akhanda, Rhythm of the Earth (SAMVAAD), Nagaland Collective, Shreya Karmakar, Gingerfeet, GATC, KL Pamei, Temsu Clover, Hope Academy, Noisy Neighbours, Juxtaposed, Dobom Doji Collective, David Angu, Alive, and Bright Lights.
Meru extended an open invitation to visitors from across India and abroad to “experience the colours, sounds, and spirit of Nagaland” while supporting regional artistes. Y. Vikheho Swu, Managing Director of Okusa Toyota Nagaland, reaffirmed Toyota’s continued support as presenting partner for the festival.
Artistes from all 17 districts of Nagaland will take the stage at the Hornbill Busking Zone, continuing the inclusive model introduced last year. This initiative offers emerging performers a lively public platform, ensuring that talent from every district is represented within the wider festival atmosphere.
A landmark addition to this year’s festival is the inaugural Nagaland Choir Games, scheduled for December 8–9 at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima. Coordinated through TaFMA’s district partners, the event will bring together choirs from across the state to celebrate harmony, vocal excellence, and the rich choral traditions of Nagaland.
In an effort to broaden cultural participation, the Hornbill Music Festival will extend its reach to six districts this year, in collaboration with district partners and local hospitality venues. This expansion aims to make the festival more accessible to communities beyond Kohima, while promoting regional tourism and grassroots music culture.
Among the most anticipated features is a special collaboration between South Korean band Mongdoll and Nagaland’s own Trance Effect, merging global sounds with local creativity. Additional international partnerships are set to be unveiled in upcoming press briefings, further underscoring the festival’s growing global footprint.
Indian citizens: An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required to enter Nagaland. Apply online via the official portal or through designated government offices.
Foreign tourists: A valid Indian tourist visa is sufficient. While Nagaland no longer requires a special permit for most foreign visitors, you must register with the local Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) within 24 hours of arrival.
