India has always had a rich heritage of arts and handicrafts that is unique to every region. The country's local craft traditions have a significant social and cultural footprint on communities. This living legacy has been passed down through generations. And they play a big part in local shopping experiences. A recent talk by Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses this. In order to boost local economies, the PM made a compelling pitch to tourists, urging them to allocate at least 10 per cent of their travel budget to purchasing local goods from the areas they visit.
Speaking at the ceremony of the UP Global Investors' Summit in Lucknow on February 19, PM Modi emphasised that while it may seem like a small amount to people, 10 per cent can make a significant difference in transforming the economic landscape of the place. He urged all travelers to incorporate local goods into their itinerary and help support the growth and prosperity of the local communities.
"It might not be a big amount for you, but it will transform the economic landscape of that place," PM Modi said, as he attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the UP Global Investors' Summit in Lucknow. "I urge everyone, when planning their travel itinerary, to allocate 10 per cent of their budget to purchasing local goods from the area they visit," the prime minister said.
Modi also stated that the 2025 Kumbh Mela will be significant for Uttar Pradesh's economy, creating unprecedented opportunities for small entrepreneurs, airlines, hotels, and restaurants. "In the coming time, a large number of jobs are going to be created here in the tourism and hospitality sectors," he said.
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) emphasises the significant role tourists can play in supporting local economies and promoting sustainable travel. By purchasing locally made crafts and products, tourists can contribute to the growth and development of small businesses in the area.
Additionally, engaging with diverse local businesses can create meaningful connections with the local community and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the local culture. UNWTO encourages tourists to consider these actions as part of their responsible and ethical travel practices.
