Kerala's Kappad Beach in Kozhikode and Chal Beach in Kannur have achieved the prestigious Blue Flag certification, an international eco-label awarded by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). This recognition highlights their adherence to stringent environmental, safety, and sustainability standards.
Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas celebrated the achievement, calling it a "milestone" in Kerala's journey as a global leader in sustainable tourism. "The Blue Flag status not only elevates the global appeal of Kappad and Chal beaches but also reinforces Kerala's reputation as a responsible tourism destination," he said.
Meanwhile, Tourism Director Sikha Surendran underscored the significance of this achievement, stating that it reflects Kerala's ongoing commitment to fostering responsible and accessible tourism.
Nestled in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, Kappad Beach is a destination that blends history, biodiversity, and natural beauty. This spot is famously known as the landing site of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama on May 20, 1498, marking the beginning of European trade in India. A commemorative stone monument reminds visitors of this historic event, attracting history enthusiasts worldwide.
Kappad Beach is also an ecological treasure, a critical nesting ground for the endangered Olive Ridley turtles. Conservation efforts, including beach clean-ups and protected nesting zones, underscore its commitment to preserving biodiversity.
The beach’s golden sands, tranquil waters, and natural rock formations create a picturesque retreat for visitors. Activities like surfing, swimming, kayaking, and boating offer adventure, while local shops and shacks serve delicious seafood and handcrafted souvenirs. Nearby attractions like the Kappad Backwaters, the historic Kappad Fort, and cultural landmarks like the Tali Temple and Pazhassi Raja Museum enhance the experience.
Located just 10 km north of Kannur in Azhikode Grama Panchayat, Chal Beach is a tranquil retreat for families and nature enthusiasts. The 800-metre stretch of soft sand offers a perfect setting for strolls, with the rhythmic sound of waves adding to the atmosphere. A 300-metre safe swimming zone, monitored by lifeguards, ensures a worry-free experience for visitors eager to wade into the waves.
Chal Beach’s attractions include a vibrant Butterfly Park, which attracts nature lovers with colourful butterflies, and a well-equipped Children’s Park, which offers fun for young visitors. The Turtle Hatchery, active during nesting season, provides a fascinating insight into Olive Ridley turtle conservation efforts.
The beach hosts Environmental and Sustainability Education Outreach programs promoting sustainability, encouraging visitors to embrace eco-friendly practices. Amenities such as accessible toilets, water ATMs to curb plastic waste, and freshwater showers enhance the experience. At the same time, a QR code feedback system offers maps, emergency contacts, and a platform for visitor input.
The Blue Flag Certification is an internationally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas, and boating operators that meet stringent environmental and safety standards. It is based on 33 criteria grouped under four major categories: environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environmental management, and conservation and safety services. Blue Flag beaches are regarded as some of the cleanest in the world, promoting an eco-tourism model that ensures clean and hygienic bathing water, safe and sustainable environments, and well-maintained facilities. The certification is granted by an international jury comprising representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In alignment with the global Blue Flag initiative, India has launched its eco-label, BEAMS (Beach Environment & Aesthetics Management Services), to promote sustainable beach management.
