If you've jotted down an underwater experience this year on your bucket list, then there's a good reason why you must turn your eyes towards Gujarat. The Gujarat state government has joined forces with Mazagon Dockyard Limited (MDL) to unveil the nation's maiden submarine tourism initiative.
While Gujarat has been a magnet for history buffs, this development is slated to showcase the mesmerising underwater world encircling Bet Dwarka, a quaint island nestled off the coast of Dwarka, a city steeped in association with Lord Krishna.
The best part is that the waiting time is not that long. Scheduled for launch ahead of Diwali this year, this project is a true sign of India's expanding efforts to provide keen travellers with one-of-a-kind experiences.
The project's focus is on exploitation, aiming to provide tourists with an exciting chance to plunge approximately 100 meters below the ocean's surface. The goal is to offer firsthand encounters with the diverse marine life enveloping the island, rumoured to harbour a submerged city attributed to Lord Krishna's legacy.
The submarine, weighing in at 35 tonnes, is designed to accommodate up to 30 passengers per journey. Crafted with two rows of seating, complete with individual window views, this vessel will be expertly piloted by two seasoned professionals, ensuring a safe and immersive experience for all on board.
Anticipated to be a catalyst for economic growth, the initiative is poised to create employment opportunities and attract investments while boosting regional tourism. Saurabh Pardhi, Managing Director of Gujarat Tourism, expressed confidence in the project's potential to elevate Dwarka's tourism profile, traditionally revered for its religious significance and the esteemed Dwarkadhish Temple—a cherished pilgrimage destination for Hindus.
As the official announcement looms on the horizon, the forthcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit is expected to herald this addition to India's tourism repertoire.
