The Whiskies of the World Awards are an annual global whisky competition organised by the Whiskies of the World team. Some of the beverage industry's leading tastemakers and influencers judges a variety of whiskies on a 100-point scale each year, based on aromatics, flavour, and finish. Hundreds of entries are received from brands all across the world, with one being selected as Best In Show. Whiskies of the World medals are recognised as a high benchmark in the spirits industry by both professionals and consumers.
This year, an Indian whisky, Indri Diwali Collector's Edition 2023, has won the Double Gold Best In Show. The award-winning whisky is brewed from six-row barley from Rajasthan and Yamuna River glacier water. It is aged in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks, giving it a rich amber colour and sweet, currant-like smells.
About Indri
Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas is a small village called Indri. This quaint place was chosen by Piccadily Distillery group as the site for their malt distillery in 2012. In 2022, their Indri Trini (a single malt) won the award for the Best Single Malt coming out of India at the World Whiskey Awards 2022, which commended the best whiskies in 16 categories covering style and production methods. In addition to being named after a village, the single malt also alludes to the Sanskrit word "Indris," which denotes the five senses. The brand has won over 14 international honours since its inception in 2021.
The word "trini" refers to the three wooden barrels in which the malt is matured - first-fill bourbon, ex-French wine, and PX sherry casks. It is distilled using the traditional Indian 6-row barley, matured in selected barrels, and blended carefully to bring out the Individual contribution of each wood without overshadowing the original whisky profile.
