Thanjavur Gets India's First Food Security Museum

Thanjavur, one of the cultural cities of Tamil Nadu, is now home to the country&rsquos first Food Security Museum, which showcases the evolution of food in India along with the history of agriculture.

The museum depicts India&rsquos food security story from a &ldquoship to mouth&rdquo existence to becoming one of the largest food grain exporting nations.

Inside, there are displays explaining how food was collected since the Mesolothic era to various methodologies of storage and challenges faced by the early man.

Interestingly, Thanjavur is where the Food Corporation of India was unveiled on January 14, 1965.

The museum also contains key information about the Food Corporation of India related to its history, Procurement, Storage and Preservation, Movement and Distribution.

Children can enjoy the 3D movie on FCI besides taking part in quizzes.

The museum has been co-developed by the FCI and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museums, Bengaluru.

It houses state-of-the-art exhibits which may be operated by the visitors through touch screens, touch sensors, proximity sensors, etc.

The museum was inaugurated by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles.
