Sri Lanka’s southern coastline has long drawn travellers with its blend of heritage, tropical landscapes, and laid-back coastal charm. In Galle, where colonial history meets contemporary tourism, a new generation of luxury hospitality is emerging—one that seeks to balance global standards with local character. Among the latest additions to this evolving landscape is Radisson Collection Resort, Galle, a contemporary beachfront retreat that brings the brand’s refined luxury ethos to one of the island’s most sought-after destinations.

At the helm of the property is Eduard Sarton, General Manager of Radisson Collection Resort, Galle. An accomplished hospitality leader with more than two decades of international experience across Asia-Pacific and Oceania, Sarton has held senior leadership positions with globally recognised luxury brands including Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, Langham Hospitality Group, and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. Known for his people-centric leadership style and focus on service excellence, he is currently leading the resort’s vision as a premier luxury lifestyle destination on Sri Lanka’s south coast.

In a conversation with Outlook Traveller, Sarton shares insights into the thinking behind the resort, the role of design and destination in shaping guest experiences, and how Radisson Collection is redefining luxury in Galle.

Q

Radisson Collection Resort, Galle introduces a contemporary luxury address to Sri Lanka’s south coast. What was the vision behind positioning the property here?

A

Our vision was to introduce a contemporary luxury destination that feels both globally relevant and deeply connected to its surroundings. Galle, with its unique blend of cultural heritage and coastal beauty, presents an incredibly compelling backdrop. We saw an opportunity to create not just a resort, but a destination in itself—one that resonates with today’s traveller who is seeking both authenticity and sophistication.

Q

The resort balances modern design with ocean-facing tranquillity. How does this influence the guest experience?

A

The relationship between design and setting is central to the experience we offer. The architecture is intentionally understated, allowing the ocean to remain the focal point. Natural light, open spaces, and uninterrupted views create a sense of calm that is immediate and immersive. It’s a balance—contemporary in its expression, yet deeply restorative in how it makes you feel.

Q

Galle is rich in history and culture. How does the hotel create a sense of place while maintaining a distinctly modern identity?

A

Galle carries a strong sense of identity, particularly through the heritage of Galle Fort. Rather than replicate tradition, we interpret it. This comes through in the details, our experiences, culinary direction, and the narratives we share with guests. The intention is to create a modern environment that still feels anchored in its location, allowing guests to connect with the destination in a more meaningful way.

Q

Dining is central to coastal holidays. How does your culinary philosophy reflect both global tastes and regional flavours?

A

Our approach to dining is both expressive and grounded. Sri Lanka offers an exceptional diversity of flavours and ingredients, particularly along the coast, and we see this as an opportunity to create something distinctive. The culinary experience is designed to feel dynamic, combining regional authenticity with global techniques, while evolving through collaborations, seasonal programming, and curated events. It is as much about storytelling as it is about flavour.

Q

As part of the Radisson Collection portfolio, the resort represents refined luxury. How is this translated into service and guest engagement at Galle?

A

For us, luxury is not defined by formality, but by how intuitively we understand our guests. At Radisson Collection Resort, Galle, service is designed to feel effortless—attentive without being intrusive, and always personalised. We focus on creating a sense of ease, where every interaction feels considered and every experience feels tailored. Ultimately, it’s about delivering something that is both refined and genuine.
