Many people make the approximately 168 km journey from Mumbai to Nashik every day by train, car, and bus. But a leftward detour from “the Maximum City” after crossing some 150 km reveals a hidden piece of paradise that is worth a full weekend getaway: Jawhar.
Located in the scenic landscape of the Palghar district, the town sits approximately 518 m above sea level and is known for its lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and deep-rooted tribal traditions. This off-the-beaten-track hill station has a long and fascinating history, dating back to 1343 when it was founded by Raja Jayaba Mukne.
But even before its official founding, Jawhar was and continues to be the home of the Warli people, an indigenous tribe famous the world over for their unique and ancient tribal painting style that depicts daily life, folklore, and cultural rituals.

Also known as the Raj Bari, this palace served as the royal residence of the Mukne rulers. Constructed in the early 20th century, the grand structure features exquisite neoclassical architecture, sprawling gardens, over 50 bedrooms, and an old-world charm that speaks of its former glory. It’s no wonder then that it’s a popular shooting location for a number of Hindi and Marathi language films.
One of the tallest waterfalls in Maharashtra, the Dabhosa Waterfall plunges at a height of 91 m, creating a spectacular sight amidst dense forests. The fall originates from the Lendi River and is a year-round attraction, though it is at its most magnificent during the monsoon season. Adventure seekers can indulge in trekking, rappelling, and kayaking here.
Perched atop a hill, Shirpamal provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. It is believed that the Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stayed here while advancing towards Surat. A red arch and a plaque mark the spot.
This artificial reservoir built on the Domihira River provides breathtaking views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges, making it an excellent spot for a picnic or a relaxing day out. The serene surroundings and cool breeze make it a favourite among birdwatchers and nature lovers.
Also known as Sunset Point, Hanuman Point offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valleys and lush green landscapes that surround Jawhar. The spot gets its name from the legend of the Hindu god Hanuman, who is believed to have rested here while traveling to Lanka. The vantage point is particularly enchanting during dusk, as the setting sun paints the sky in hues of orange and red.
This multi-tiered waterfall is special because it flows throughout the year and not just during the monsoon season. The rugged terrain surrounding it makes it an ideal destination for nature walks, trekking, and adventure photography. Due to being less well-known among tourists, visitors can soak in the peaceful solitude to their heart’s delight.
Visitors are encouraged to tour the local villages where Warli artisans continue to practice their traditional art form that makes use of natural colours and intricate geometric patterns. They can purchase authentic paintings, handicrafts, and souvenirs to remember their holiday.
Jawhar is home to various plant species, including medicinal herbs and towering trees that thrive in its monsoon-fed ecosystem, like the Moringa concanensis, Argemone mexicana, Hibiscus cannabinus and Breidelia retusa.
The presence of rivers, waterfalls, and dense vegetation further enhances the biodiversity, providing a thriving habitat for various animals, birds, and insects. These include the Malabar whistling thrush, the Indian pitta, the eastern cattle egret, the Indian python, and the stout sand snake. By road, the hill station is approximately 160 km from Mumbai and 80 km from Nashik, which also has the closest airport. State transport buses and private vehicles frequently operate the routes between these two cities.
The nearest railway station is in Igatpuri, around 70 km away. Visitors can hire taxis or take buses from Igatpuri to reach Jawhar.
