Sri Lanka’s hospitality landscape has undergone a quiet transformation in recent years, moving beyond traditional luxury to embrace more intimate, design-forward, and experience-led stays. At the forefront of this shift is the W15 Collection—a portfolio of boutique properties that reflect the island’s diverse landscapes, from sun-drenched coasts to misty hill country retreats.
Leading this vision is Hardy Jamaldeen, a Sri Lankan entrepreneur and Executive Director of W15. With over two decades of experience across finance, real estate, and strategic investment, Jamaldeen brings a disciplined, investment-led approach to hospitality—balancing commercial rigour with a strong sense of place and lifestyle-driven storytelling. His journey began in London’s financial sector, where he worked on real estate transactions exceeding USD 1.6 billion, before returning to Sri Lanka to establish Steradian Capital Investments, now a leading real estate advisory firm.
Under his leadership, W15 has evolved into a distinctive brand known for its design sensibility, immersive experiences, and strong operational foundation. From its first property in Weligama to the internationally recognised W15 Hanthana—recipient of a Michelin Key—the collection continues to expand while retaining a sharp focus on authenticity and individuality. Jamaldeen has also held board positions at leading institutions such as Hayleys PLC and People’s Bank, bringing cross-sector insight into building W15 as a scalable lifestyle brand.
In this conversation, he shares insights into the philosophy behind W15, the importance of place-driven storytelling, and how the brand continues to shape contemporary travel experiences in Sri Lanka.
W15 has built a distinctive collection of boutique properties across Sri Lanka. What is the overarching vision behind curating this portfolio, and how do you ensure each property retains its own unique identity?
At its core, W15 was never conceived as a “hotel chain”—it was envisioned as a collection of experiences rooted in place, personality, and authenticity. Our overarching vision is to create a portfolio of asset-backed, experience-led hospitality destinations that reflect the diversity of Sri Lanka itself.
We are deeply intentional about avoiding uniformity. Each property is treated as an individual story rather than a replication of a template. The architecture, interiors, service style, and even the food philosophy are all shaped by the immediate environment and cultural context.
What ties everything together is not sameness, but a shared ethos—warm Sri Lankan hospitality, understated luxury, strong design sensibility, and a focus on curated experiences. In essence, W15 is a brand where consistency lies in quality and philosophy, not in duplication.

How does W15 select locations and concepts for its properties, and what role does local culture and landscape play in shaping each experience?
Location selection is both strategic and emotional. We look for places that have inherent narrative value—whether it’s a dramatic coastline, a culturally rich town, or a lesser-known destination with untapped potential.
But beyond commercial viability, we ask a simple question: “What story does this place want to tell?”
Local culture and landscape are not just influences—they are the foundation of the concept. From materials used in construction to the culinary direction and guest activities, everything is informed by the surroundings.
For example, coastal properties lean into ocean energy, surf culture, and barefoot luxury, while hill country locations embrace tranquillity, nature immersion, and slower rhythms of life. We collaborate with local communities, artisans, and talent to ensure that each property feels authentic rather than imposed.
Your collection spans diverse settings—from coastal escapes to serene hill country retreats. How do you tailor guest experiences across these varied destinations while maintaining a consistent brand ethos?
The diversity of our locations is one of W15’s greatest strengths. We don’t try to standardise the experience—instead, we curate it to suit the destination.
In coastal destinations, the experience is vibrant and social—focused on beach culture, food, music, and energy. In contrast, our hill country properties are designed to be introspective—centred around wellness, nature, and quiet luxury.
What remains consistent is the W15 philosophy:
• Personalised service rather than transactional hospitality
• Strong design identity with a sense of place
• High-quality food and beverage experiences
• A deep respect for the environment and community
So while the pace and mood may change, the emotional takeaway for the guest—authenticity, comfort, and connection—remains constant.
W15 Hanthana offers a tranquil escape in the hills near Kandy. What inspired this property, and how does it cater to travellers seeking a more immersive, nature-led experience?
W15 Hanthana was inspired by the idea of creating a sanctuary above the noise—a place where guests can reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with a slower way of living.
The Hanthana mountain range, just outside Kandy, offers breathtaking views, misty mornings, and a sense of calm that is increasingly rare. We wanted to harness that natural energy and build an experience around stillness, perspective, and immersion.
The property is intentionally intimate, allowing for personalised engagement. Experiences range from guided nature walks and tea trails to wellness-focused stays and curated dining that highlights local ingredients.
It appeals to a traveller who is not just passing through, but one who wants to pause, reflect, and truly experience the destination.
The Ambuluwawa property is set in a truly unique and elevated location. Could you share more about what makes this destination special and the kind of experiences guests can expect there?

Ambuluwawa is one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary landscapes—an elevated biodiversity complex that offers 360-degree panoramic views across multiple mountain ranges.
What makes this location truly special is its sense of altitude and perspective—you are quite literally above it all. The iconic tower at Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is not just an architectural landmark; it’s an experience in itself.
Our vision here is to create something that is experiential and almost surreal—a destination where guests can engage with nature in a dramatic, almost cinematic setting.
Experiences will be centred around:
• Sunrise and sunset viewings above the clouds
• Guided explorations of the biodiversity park
• Wellness and mindfulness sessions in a high-altitude setting
• Intimate, design-led accommodation that complements the landscape
It’s a destination for travellers seeking something rare and memorable—where the journey, the setting, and the experience converge into something truly unique.
