As winter settles over Maharashtra, the state reveals a quieter, more navigable side of itself. Located in the Chandrapur district, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is Maharashtra’s oldest and most prominent wildlife sanctuary. Unlike more commercial hill stations, Chikhaldara remains relatively restrained in scale. Viewpoints such as Panchbol Point and Mozari Point offer expansive valley views, particularly striking at sunrise and sunset. Proximity to the Melghat Tiger Reserve adds ecological significance to the region, while coffee plantations and forested trails provide quieter alternatives to sightseeing. Chikhaldara works best for travellers seeking isolation, mild weather, and landscape-led experiences rather than structured activities.
On the Konkan coast, Kunkeshwar presents a different winter mood altogether. Situated in Sindhudurg district, the village is centred around an ancient Shiva temple located directly on the shoreline, earning it the title “Kashi of the South Konkan.” Winter brings calm seas and manageable humidity, making coastal walks and temple visits more comfortable. Beyond its religious importance, Kunkeshwar offers insight into everyday coastal life. Simple homestays, local seafood preparations, and unhurried routines define the experience. The village remains relatively untouched by large-scale tourism, allowing visitors to observe the rhythm of Konkan life without spectacle.
A short distance from Kunkeshwar lies Tarkarli, one of Maharashtra’s best-known coastal destinations. Winter conditions here are particularly favourable, with clear skies and calm waters. Tarkarli is known for its relatively transparent sea, which supports snorkelling and scuba diving, rare activities along much of India’s west coast. The nearby Sindhudurg Fort, built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, adds historical depth to the visit, while boat rides along the Karli River offer a quieter contrast to the open sea. Tarkarli balances accessibility with natural appeal, making it suitable for both short stays and extended coastal itineraries.
The Ajanta and Ellora caves represent some of India’s most significant artistic and architectural achievements. Located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, the cave complexes are best explored in winter, when cooler temperatures make walking between sites less demanding. Ajanta’s murals depict scenes from the life of the Buddha, while Ellora spans multiple religious traditions, culminating in the Kailasa Temple, an entire rock-cut structure carved from a single mountain. Winter allows visitors to spend longer hours at the sites, engaging more closely with the scale and detail of the carvings without the fatigue caused by summer heat.
Overlooking the plains near Kolhapur, Panhala combines natural scenery with layered history. Once a strategic stronghold of the Maratha empire, Panhala Fort is now part of the UNESCO-recognised Maratha Military Landscapes of India. Winter weather makes it easier to explore the fort’s expansive grounds, bastions, and hidden structures such as the Andhar Bavadi stepwell. Mist-covered hills and forested trails around Panhala attract trekkers and photographers, while the site’s historical associations add narrative depth. Panhala works well as a reflective destination, where landscape and history intersect without heavy tourist infrastructure.
