Room-Rotting Is The Gen Z Travel Trend That Celebrates Doing Absolutely Nothing; These 5 Indian Hotels Are Perfect For It

From Udaipur to Darjeeling, discover some of India's best hotels for room-rotting, where luxurious rooms become the destination

There was a time when holidays meant squeezing as many attractions as possible into a few days. This meant waking up early, ticking off famous tourist spots, queuing up for museums, hunting for the best cafés, and coming back exhausted. But a growing number of travellers, especially Gen Z, are taking a very different approach.

Instead of planning packed itineraries, they're checking into beautiful hotels and choosing not to leave their rooms at all. The idea is to switch off, order room service, watch the view from the window, binge a favourite show, and nap whenever you feel like it.

The trend, called room-rotting, first took off on TikTok and Instagram, but it's now becoming a genuine travel style. According to a report by Airbnb in partnership with YouGov, two-thirds of Gen Z travellers say they travel with the intention of doing very little. Eight in ten spend at least half their holiday relaxing at their accommodation instead of heading out sightseeing.

What Is Room-Rotting?

Despite the dramatic name, room-rotting isn't actually about laziness. It's about intentional rest. The idea is to book a hotel where the room itself becomes the destination. Instead of spending the day outside, you stay in, sleep longer, read, order room service, enjoy the view from your balcony, soak in a bathtub or simply do nothing without feeling guilty.

It is, in many ways, the opposite of hustle culture. After months of deadlines, constant notifications and busy schedules, many travellers now see true luxury as having nowhere to be and nothing to do.

Of course, not every hotel is built for this. The perfect room-rotting stay needs exceptionally comfortable beds, thoughtful interiors, seamless room service, beautiful views and enough privacy that stepping outside doesn't even cross your mind. So, if your dream holiday sounds more like spending an entire day in a fluffy bathrobe than racing between tourist attractions, these hotels are made for you.
