The Little Rann of Kutch is not the conventional form of a desert. Its horizon is a vast sheet of salt flats, scrubland, and seasonal wetlands, changing character with the seasons. During the monsoon, parts of the Rann turn into shallow wetlands; as the water recedes, the landscape dries into an austere expanse of cracked earth and salt. This is the domain of the Indian Wild Ass, along with nilgai, desert foxes, jackals, wolves, hyenas, and an extraordinary variety of birds. Winter brings flamingos, cranes, pelicans, raptors, and other migratory species, making the region particularly rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
