The stories represented in Patachitra came from both well-known Hindu traditions and the cultural life of Bengal. Episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas were common subjects, but artists also drew heavily from local legends, religious beliefs, and popular stories. Tales of Manasa, the snake goddess, were particularly important in Bengal, where the story was closely connected with local beliefs and rural life. Stories associated with Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also became popular among Bengali audiences. By presenting these subjects through familiar images and songs, Patuas made complex religious and cultural stories easier for ordinary audiences to follow and remember.
