International holidays are no longer limited to the usual summer break. For Indian travellers, fall and winter are emerging as travel seasons in their own right, with more travellers seeking destinations and experiences best enjoyed at a particular time of year.

From watching the Northern Lights in the Arctic and exploring European Christmas markets to skiing in the Canadian Rockies and celebrating New Year's in Australia and New Zealand, the options go well beyond a traditional winter holiday. The shift also comes at a time when geopolitical uncertainty disrupted some summer travel plans to Europe. For travellers still keen to visit the continent, the months from September to January offer another opportunity to plan an international holiday.

What Is Driving The Shift?

The growing interest in fall and winter travel reflects a broader shift in how Indians plan international holidays. Instead of following standard sightseeing itineraries, travellers are increasingly seeking experiences tied to the season.

He added that travellers are increasingly seeking holidays that are “richer, more immersive and built around meaningful experiences” and are willing to explore beyond conventional winter destinations.

The demand is also becoming more varied. S.D. Nandakumar, President and Country Head – Holidays and Corporate Tours, SOTC Travel Limited, said, “The winter holiday is evolving from a standard itinerary into a carefully curated experience.” Travellers are combining destinations with Northern Lights escapes, scenic rail journeys, unique stays, local gastronomy, wellness and snow-filled adventures.

He also pointed to changing traveller preferences, with couples seeking immersive escapes, families combining festive celebrations with adventure, and younger travellers and groups looking beyond the conventional winter circuit.

Northern Lights And Arctic Adventures

The Northern Lights remain one of the biggest attractions for the season, with Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland offering different ways to experience the Arctic.

But an Aurora trip is no longer just about standing outside and waiting for the lights to appear. Travellers can go husky or reindeer sledging, explore snowy landscapes on snowmobiles and try snowshoeing. The stay itself can also become part of the experience, with glass-ceilinged igloos, snow hotels, log cabins, and Arctic tree houses offering more than a standard hotel room.

Christmas Markets And Alpine Escapes

Europe takes on a different character during the colder months. Cities and towns across France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and the Czech Republic come alive with Christmas markets, illuminated streets, seasonal food and festive celebrations.
