The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai Makes The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 List

The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai has moved up eight places on The World’s 50 Best Hotels list, securing the No. 30 spot in the 2026 edition. The iconic hotel, which has been welcoming guests since 1903, is the only Indian property to feature among the world’s top 50 hotels this year.

For the second consecutive year, the Mumbai landmark has made the cut, adding another chapter to a story that began more than 120 years ago. The rankings were announced at a ceremony in Paris on September 15, where the global hospitality industry gathered to celebrate the year’s standout properties.

The Taj Mahal Palace has been part of Mumbai’s story for generations. From its distinctive red dome overlooking the Arabian Sea to its grand interiors and long list of distinguished guests, the hotel has become as much a part of the city’s identity as the Gateway of India next door.

A Hotel That Predates The Gateway Of India

When The Taj Mahal Palace opened its doors on December 16, 1903, the Gateway of India did not yet exist. The landmark arch would come up nearly a decade later, in 1911, to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

The hotel was the vision of Jamsetji Tata, who wanted to build a grand property that would put Bombay on the global map. Its opening was a significant moment for the city, introducing modern amenities and an ambitious approach to hospitality.

With its distinctive dome and a mix of Indo-Saracenic, Moorish and Renaissance influences, the hotel soon became a landmark on the waterfront. Over the years, it has welcomed royalty, heads of state, film stars and travellers from around the world.

The property has also lived through some of Mumbai’s defining moments, from the years before Independence to the changing face of modern India. Its Heritage Wing retains much of its old-world character, while the Tower Wing offers a more contemporary experience.

More than a century after it first opened, The Taj Mahal Palace remains one of Mumbai’s most recognisable addresses. Its latest appearance on The World’s 50 Best Hotels list adds another accolade to its long history.

Paris Hosts Hospitality’s Finest

The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 were announced at Les Salles du Carrousel in Paris. It was the first time the ceremony moved from London to the French capital.

Rosewood Hong Kong retained the No. 1 position for the second consecutive year. It remains the only hotel to have held on to the top spot since the awards began in 2023.

“This award is deeply meaningful. It has immensely benefitted Hong Kong, going beyond the hotel itself by revitalising the city’s global appeal post-pandemic,” said Hugo Montanari, Managing Director of Rosewood Hong Kong.

Montanari accepted the honour alongside members of the hotel’s finance, engineering and culinary teams.

Asia dominated the top five once again. Capella Bangkok came in at No. 2, followed by Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River at No. 3. Dubai’s Atlantis The Royal secured fourth place, while Lake Como’s Passalacqua rounded out the top five.

Passalacqua, which was named the world’s best hotel in the inaugural 2023 edition, also claimed ‘The Best Hotel in Europe’ and ‘The Best Boutique Hotel’ titles. The latter marks its third consecutive win in the category.

How The Taj Mahal Palace Made The List

The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is decided by an Academy of more than 800 members, including hoteliers, journalists, educators and experienced travellers. The panel votes anonymously, with regional Academy Chairs helping shape its geographical and gender representation.

Unlike rankings that follow a fixed set of criteria, The 50 relies on the experiences and perspectives of its members. The result is a list shaped by what its well-travelled voters value in a hotel.

For The Taj Mahal Palace, the move from No. 38 to No. 30 marks a significant improvement from last year. Its presence on the list also places a century-old Mumbai institution alongside some of the most talked-about names in global hospitality.

Asia Holds Its Ground

Asia continued to make its presence felt across the rankings. Bangkok had two more hotels in the Top 50, with Mandarin Oriental Bangkok at No. 10 and newcomer Aman Nai Lert at No. 48. Hong Kong’s Upper House came in at No. 8, while The Peninsula Hong Kong secured No. 46.

“These last few years have been a breakthrough for us. The world is starting to see how unique and personalised our identity as a brand truly is,” said Simon McHendry, General Manager at Upper House.

Japan also had a strong showing, with four properties making the list. Aman Tokyo ranked No. 11, followed by Bulgari Tokyo at No. 24. Patina Osaka entered at No. 33 and received the Nikka Best New Hotel Award, while Park Hyatt Kyoto came in at No. 37.

Singapore’s Raffles Singapore secured No. 17, making it the city-state’s only hotel in the Top 50. Capella Singapore featured on the extended list at No. 97.

“It’s an incredibly competitive list, so having two Raffles in the top 50 and maintaining our position is remarkable,” said Omer Acar, CEO of Raffles & Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. “I’m immensely proud of our teams; this award belongs to them and their dedication.”

Europe Dominates The 50

Europe had the largest representation on this year’s list, with 21 hotels across the continent making the cut. Italy and France led with six properties each, followed by the UK with four.

The regional awards also recognised hotels for their design and service. Hotel du Couvent in Nice, which ranked No. 38, received the Johnnie Walker Art of Design Award. Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz, Switzerland, at No. 36, took home the SeiBellissimi Art of Hospitality Award.

Managing Director Richard Leuenberger described the recognition for service as “better than winning number one”.

Meanwhile, Casa Maria Luigia in Modena, owned by chef Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore, won the Lavazza Highest New Entry Award at No. 18. The 12-room retreat brings together food, art, music and Emilia-Romagna’s cultural heritage.

“Our hotel is an extension of the journey we began at Osteria Francescana,” said Gilmore.

The 50 Redefines Excellence

The 2026 edition comes at an interesting time for the awards. Now in its fourth year, The World’s 50 Best Hotels is part of William Reed’s wider hospitality portfolio, which also includes rankings for restaurants and bars.

The organisation recently introduced a new identity, bringing its various lists under the banner of ‘The 50’. The rebrand includes a new name, logo and visual identity, with the aim of bringing its hospitality awards together under one umbrella.

Beyond the hotel rankings, NIHI Sumba CEO and founder James McBride received the SevenRooms Icon Award, the only distinction dedicated to an individual. The award recognised his work in building a luxury hospitality brand in a destination far removed from the traditional luxury travel circuit.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, meanwhile, took home the Ferrari Trento Most Admired Hotel Group Award. Its properties featured prominently across the list, including Rosewood São Paulo at No. 7, Rosewood Hotel de Crillon in Paris at No. 14 and Las Ventanas al Paraíso in Los Cabos at No. 25.
