Kerala To Deploy Green Marshals At Tourist Destinations From October

Kerala, a long-standing favourite among solo travellers, is now planning to add another layer of support at its tourist spots with the introduction of Green Marshals. The initiative, which is scheduled to be officially rolled out on October 9, will bring trained personnel to selected destinations to assist visitors, monitor safety and keep an eye on the upkeep of tourist areas. Their responsibilities, however, will extend beyond visitor assistance. From waste management and environmental protection to ensuring basic facilities remain functional, the Green Marshals will have a broad role in managing destinations. The programme is also expected to create around 180 jobs in its first phase.

A New Local Network

The Green Marshal initiative has been conceived by Kerala’s tourism department as a way to establish a dedicated local workforce that can monitor tourist destinations on a day-to-day basis. The first phase will see the personnel deployed at select tourist spots, where they will be responsible for identifying gaps and responding to issues faced by visitors.

Their work will cover several aspects of destination management. Green Marshals will assist tourists, monitor safety, check whether facilities are functioning properly and provide support during emergencies. They will also oversee concerns around cleanliness and waste management, while contributing to the protection of the surrounding environment.

The focus on women’s safety comes against the backdrop of changing travel patterns. More people are choosing to travel independently, with women forming a growing part of the solo travel segment. Safety And Sustainability

Green Marshals will be expected to keep track of cleanliness, waste disposal and the condition of basic facilities. They will also help identify areas where destination management needs improvement. 180 Jobs In First Phase

The first phase of the initiative is expected to generate employment for around 180 people. Candidates between 20 and 40 years of age will be eligible to apply, while SSLC will be the minimum educational qualification.

The Green Marshals will be stationed at selected tourist destinations initially, with their responsibilities spanning safety monitoring, visitor assistance, environmental care and basic destination upkeep. Their presence is also expected to help tourism authorities identify problems more quickly rather than relying solely on periodic inspections.

For Kerala, the move comes as the state continues to attract travellers looking for everything from relaxed backwater holidays and beach breaks to wellness retreats and independent journeys. Making tourist destinations easier to navigate and better maintained could add another dimension to the visitor experience.
