Gujarat Launches Luxury Narmada Cruise Near Statue of Unity

Soon there will be a new way to experience the Narmada River in Gujarat with the launch of a 600-passenger luxury cruise designed to expand tourism around the Statue of Unity. Unveiled on August 4, the vessel will begin commercial operations after receiving the required statutory approvals, complying with prescribed safety requirements. This is the second cruise to operate in the area, albeit the first of this stature. A 200-passenger service is already operational in the area which offers visitors river views of the monument and the surrounding landscape. 

The large cruise comes as a response to rising tourist numbers and an increasing demand for river-based experiences. The project is expected to diversify tourism offerings by creating a venue for leisure, events and hospitality. It also forms a part of Gujarat’s continued investment in strengthening Ekta Nagar as a year-round tourism destination. 

A Cruise Designed For Experiences 

The new cruise is not just for conventional sightseeing. It is built as a floating venue capable of hosting social, cultural, and corporate events. From birthday celebrations and destination weddings to corporate gatherings, product launches, and cultural performances - this cruise is built to serve every occasion.

Announcing the launch, the state government said, “In response to the growing number of tourists and increasing demand, the new, larger cruise has been introduced to significantly expand the destination's tourism offerings.” The vessel measures 30 metres in length, features a dining area with seating for 250 guests, and includes a dedicated 5x4 metre performance stage. Decorative architectural lighting has also been incorporated to enhance evening and night cruises.

Building On Ekta Nagar’s Tourism Growth

The launch builds on the popularity of the existing cruise operated by the Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority. Officials say the new vessel has been introduced to meet growing demand while adding another attraction to the destination's expanding tourism portfolio.

Over the past few years, Ekta Nagar has steadily evolved into more than a single-attraction destination, with investments in nature-based attractions, recreational experiences and visitor infrastructure. The addition of a larger cruise is expected to complement these offerings by encouraging longer stays and attracting a wider range of travellers, including corporate groups and event organisers.

Expanding River Tourism

The cruise comes at a time when India is noticing a broader shift towards experience-led travel. Destinations are investing more in attractions that are combining sightseeing with hospitality, entertainment, events and community engagements, allowing visitors to engage with a place beyond its principal landmarks. River cruises, in particular, are emerging as an important part of this strategy, transforming waterways into tourism assets rather than only being scenic backdrops. 

Gujarat recorded 12.4 crore domestic tourist visits in 2025, marking a 36.9 per cent increase from the previous year. The cruise comes at a ripe time, giving  the increased interest in the state a further boost.
