Goa is once again at the centre of global cinematic attention as the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) begins its much-awaited nine-day celebration from November 20 to 28, 2025. With a theme rooted in creative excellence, technological innovation, and cultural unity, IFFI 2025 aims to surpass its own legacy, offering a vibrant, immersive and inclusive experience for filmmakers and audiences alike.
First held in 1952, IFFI has grown into South Asia’s most prestigious cinematic platform, jointly organised by National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), and the Entertainment Society of Goa.
The first edition of IFFI was organised by the Films Division of the Government of India, under the patronage of India’s first Prime Minister. The inaugural festival was held in Mumbai from January 24 to February 1, 1952, before travelling to Madras, Delhi, Calcutta and Trivandrum. Showcasing around 40 feature films and 100 short films, the Delhi leg of the festival was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on February 21, 1952, marking the beginning of India’s enduring commitment to global cinematic exchange.
As the festival enters its 56th edition against Goa’s picturesque coastal backdrop, it promises to deliver an unforgettable journey through world cinema, Indian artistry and cutting-edge innovation.
The festival will begin tomorrow with a historic Opening Parade, transforming Goa’s streets into a moving showcase of India’s cinematic spirit. Majestic tableaus from Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Goa, along with striking creations from iconic Indian film studios, will headline the procession. A special National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) tableau will pay tribute to 50 years of cinematic excellence.
The parade’s centrepiece, “Bharat Ek Soor”, will bring together 100 folk artists performing traditional dances from across the country. Beloved characters such as Chhota Bheem, Chutki, Motu Patlu and Bittu Bahanebaaz will add colour, nostalgia and delight, especially for young visitors.
As the vibrant pageantry unfolds, the procession will serve not just as a ceremonial opening but as a symbolic ode to India’s undying love for storytelling. Each tableau will capture the cultural heartbeat of its region, setting the tone for a festival that celebrates cinema as a living, breathing art form.
