Why Air India Is Scaling Back International Flights This Summer

From Chicago to Singapore, Air India’s revised summer schedule will impact travellers across North America, Europe, and Asia

The summer travel rush is usually when airlines add flights, open new routes and chase demand across continents. This year, however, Air India is doing the opposite. Between June and August 2026, the airline will trim frequencies, suspend select international services and redraw parts of its long-haul network as rising fuel prices and operational pressures reshape the economics of flying out of India.

For travellers planning holidays, student departures, or business trips abroad, the timing could not be more significant. Several routes linking India to North America, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia will either disappear temporarily or operate with fewer weekly flights. The airline insists international operations remain extensive, with more than 1,200 international flights continuing every month, but the summer schedule will look noticeably thinner than what passengers have become used to over the last two years.

Summer Reset

At the centre of the disruption is a mix of soaring aviation turbine fuel costs and continued airspace restrictions affecting long-haul operations. Together, these factors have stretched flying times, increased operational expenses and made several routes commercially difficult to sustain through the peak summer season.

Instead of risking erratic last-minute cancellations, Air India has chosen to rationalise services in advance. The move follows mounting pressure on global airlines operating through conflict-sensitive corridors where rerouted flights mean longer sectors and heavier fuel burn. For Indian carriers already managing intense competition and ambitious expansion plans, the impact has been especially sharp.

The cuts are spread across nearly every major international region served by the airline. North America, Europe, Australia, and large parts of Asia will all see reductions, though the scale varies from route to route. The changes also arrive at a time when international demand from India remains high, particularly during the summer holiday window when students, families and leisure travellers traditionally fill outbound flights.

Routes Affected

Among the most significant suspensions is the Delhi–Chicago route, which will remain paused through the summer period. Services from Delhi to San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver have also been reduced. Delhi–Toronto, for instance, will temporarily drop from ten weekly flights to five before returning to daily operations in August. Delhi–Vancouver will reduce from daily to five weekly flights.

New York-bound passengers are also facing changes. Mumbai–New York (JFK) and Delhi–Newark services will be suspended temporarily, although Mumbai–Newark flights are being increased to daily operations, suggesting a network reshuffle rather than a complete withdrawal from the market.

Europe-bound travellers will encounter a leaner schedule as well. Flights connecting Delhi with Paris, Rome, Zurich, Vienna, Copenhagen and Milan are all seeing reductions in weekly frequency. Australia has not been spared either, with both Delhi–Melbourne and Delhi–Sydney dropping from daily operations to four flights a week during the affected months.

The sharpest cuts, however, are across Asia and neighbouring regions. Delhi–Shanghai has been suspended through August, while Chennai–Singapore, Mumbai–Dhaka and Delhi–Malé have also been temporarily halted. Flights to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu and Colombo will continue, though at lower frequencies.

The reduction in flights comes at a complicated moment for international travellers because supply across the broader aviation market is already under pressure. Gulf carriers, often the preferred option for Indian passengers flying westward, are also operating reduced capacities on some sectors. With fewer seats available overall, fares on several routes are expected to remain elevated through the summer.

Passenger Impact

For passengers already holding tickets on affected flights, Air India says alternative arrangements, revised bookings and refunds will be offered depending on availability and fare conditions. Travellers have been advised to rely only on official airline communication channels for updates, especially after misinformation circulated online claiming that all international flights had been suspended due to fuel shortages.

That speculation gained traction quickly across social media before the airline clarified that international operations were continuing, albeit on a revised schedule. In reality, the cuts reflect a larger industry challenge rather than an isolated operational issue. Fuel now accounts for an increasingly heavy share of airline expenses, and rerouted international flights are becoming harder to sustain profitably.

For travellers, though, the impact is immediate and tangible. Fewer direct flights often mean higher fares, longer layovers and reduced flexibility at a time when international travel demand from India continues to surge. The coming months may therefore test not just airline economics, but also the patience and planning skills of summer flyers trying to navigate a shrinking schedule map.
