At a time when spiritual journeys are increasingly becoming about comfort, immersion and meaningful experiences—not just reaching a destination—the company is positioning itself at the centre of a rapidly growing market.

The move marks Tamara’s entry into a segment that has seen remarkable momentum in recent years. India is home to more than 450,000 religious and cultural heritage sites, and spiritual tourism today accounts for over 60 per cent of domestic travel. With improved infrastructure, better connectivity and a growing appetite for culturally rooted travel experiences, pilgrimage destinations are drawing not only devotees but also a new generation of travellers seeking deeper engagement with local traditions and heritage.

A Growing Market

The launch of Raé comes amid a broader shift in how Indians are travelling. Pilgrimage circuits that were once largely defined by accessibility and basic accommodation are witnessing increasing demand for organised, experience-led stays. Industry estimates cited by the company suggest that mid-scale and premium pilgrimage hospitality is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 20–24 per cent, reflecting travellers’ willingness to invest in more comfortable and thoughtfully curated journeys.

While many hotels operate in major pilgrimage destinations, few have been designed specifically around the rhythms, rituals and practical needs of faith-based travel. The brand takes its name from “Raé”, described as a ray of light, radiance and grace. Its philosophy revolves around creating spaces that are sensitive to spiritual journeys while remaining rooted in local culture. Rather than functioning as conventional hotels near temples, churches or shrines, the properties are envisioned as extensions of the pilgrimage itself.

Tamara has committed an initial capital expenditure of approximately INR 200 crore towards the brand’s first phase of development. The investment includes the rebranding and expansion of two existing properties as well as the creation of a new hotel in one of India’s most visited pilgrimage centres.

The first Raé by Tamara properties will open in Guruvayur, Kerala, and Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, both converted from existing Tamara-operated assets. The Guruvayur property will feature 36 rooms and is expected to welcome guests in July, while the 45-key Kumbakonam hotel is scheduled to open in August. The company is also developing an 80-key property in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu, home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health and one of the country’s most important Christian pilgrimage destinations. The Velankanni project is expected to open during the current financial year.

Beyond these locations, Tamara is preparing to expand the brand through an asset-light model in Tirupati, Palani and Tiruvannamalai, three of South India’s most significant spiritual destinations. These properties are expected to become operational in FY27. The company has indicated that several additional signings are likely over the coming months as it builds a nationwide network focused on pilgrimage travel.

Beyond Hotel Stays

What sets Raé apart is its attempt to build a hospitality framework around the specific needs of pilgrims. The brand plans to introduce destination-specific experiences such as locally rooted “Mitra” companions, shrine-aligned schedules, personalised pre-arrival guidance and dining options tailored to faith-based preferences.

The idea is to make the journey smoother and more intuitive, whether guests are travelling for darshan, attending religious festivals or undertaking multi-stop pilgrimages. By integrating local knowledge and cultural understanding into the guest experience, Tamara hopes to create a hospitality model that feels relevant to both seasoned pilgrims and first-time visitors.

Looking ahead, the company has ambitious plans for growth. Raé by Tamara is targeting around 25 properties across India’s pilgrimage circuit by 2030, creating what it describes as a trusted hospitality network for travellers across faiths. As spiritual tourism evolves from a functional journey into a more immersive travel category, hospitality brands are increasingly recognising its potential.
