If you needed another reason to head to Ladakh this September, here it is. The Suru Outdoor Fest is bringing two weeks of adventure, music, and mountain life to Suru Valley near Kargil. The 10th edition of the festival will take place from September 10 to 25, with more than 1,000 people from 25 countries expected to attend.

From bouldering and mountain biking to kayaking, highlining, yoga and live music, there is plenty lined up. And you don't have to be an adventure sports pro to join in.

A Decade Of Adventure In Suru Valley

The festival began in 2016 when a group of friends arrived in Suru Valley with their crash pads. What started as a small gathering has since grown into a multi-sport outdoor festival that attracts participants from around the world.

The main action takes place at Suru's outdoor bouldering area, surrounded by the valley's mountains and open landscapes. The festival has also helped introduce Suru to a wider adventure community. In 2019, it won the UIAA Rock Climbing Festival Award, adding to its growing reputation.

This year's programme includes eight activities – bouldering, highlining, mountain biking, kayaking, flow arts, yoga, and martial arts. There will also be music and film screenings throughout the festival.

There is something for both serious adventure seekers and beginners. Participants can try bouldering, highlining, mountain biking and kayaking, or opt for yoga, flow arts and martial arts.

Music and film screenings will run alongside the activities, giving visitors plenty to do after a day outdoors.

A Basecamp For Remote Workers

Two weeks in the mountains sounds tempting, but taking that much time off isn't always possible. The festival's Wi-Fi-enabled basecamp is designed with remote workers and digital nomads in mind.

You can spend the morning answering emails or finishing work and head out for an adventure in the afternoon. Not a bad way to spend a workday.

Giving Back To The Valley

The festival also puts some of its focus on the place where it is held. Part of the proceeds goes towards conservation work in Suru Valley, including trail building and waste management.

Local families also host festival visitors, allowing the event to bring income into the surrounding communities. The idea is to encourage tourism while also keeping the valley's fragile environment in mind.
