Ramakrishna Mission, a non-political, non-sectarian spiritual organisation, is well-known throughout the world for its various philanthropic activities. It is named after the Hindu spiritual leader and mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Deva and is headquartered at Belur Math, West Bengal. The Ramakrishna Mission branch in Delhi, which first opened its doors in 1927, is now in its 96th year. For the first time this year, it will celebrate Durga Puja with idol worship.
The Delhi Ramakrishna Mission is organising a four-day Durga Puja (between Saptami and Dashami, October 20 to 24), during which an idol of the goddess will be worshipped. A beautiful pandal has been created in the premises, with a marble platform, to keep the idol of the goddess Durga. Previously, a puja would be done exclusively on Ashtami, when a pata (image) of the goddess would be worshipped with devotees attending the pushpanjali (flower offering to the goddess).
Over 15,000 devotees are anticipated to attend the puja, and on Saptami, Ashtami, and Nabami, they will all be offered prasad for lunch.
The Delhi Ramakrishna Mission will also host a Kumari Puja, which takes place on Ashtami and involves the worship of a seven to eight-year-old girl as an embodiment of Durga. Another important event is the Sandhi Puja, which takes place between Ashtami and Nabami, and involves the worship of Chamunda Devi.
