The United States Embassy has announced a significant update for non-immigrant visa applicants. Starting April 7, 2025, all individuals applying for non-immigrant visas will need to present a printed copy of their DS-160 confirmation page, which must include a barcode. This new requirement is part of a broader update to the visa application process and aims to streamline the appointment scheduling and verification process.

What Do The New Policies Entail?

  • DS-160 Confirmation Page: All non-immigrant visa applicants must bring a printed copy of the confirmation page of the DS-160 form to their interview. This page must display the barcode used to schedule the appointment.

  • Matching Barcode Numbers: Before the interview, applicants must ensure that the barcode number on their DS-160 confirmation page matches the one used to book their appointment. If there is a mismatch, applicants will not be allowed to attend the interview and will need to reschedule their appointment through the USTravelDocs website with the correct DS-160 barcode number.

  • DS-160 Form Requirements: The DS-160, also known as the "Online Non-immigrant Visa Application," is used for applying for all types of US non-immigrant visas, including B-1/B-2 visitor visas, K (fiancé) visas, F-1 student visas, and work visas such as H-1B and O-1. Completing and submitting this form online is a crucial step in the visa application process.

  • Visa Processing Fee: There is no fee for submitting the DS-160 form itself. However, applicants will still be required to pay the visa processing fee, which is typically USD 185 for most non-petition-based non-immigrant visas.

Changes to the US Visa Renewal Process in India

In addition to the DS-160 updates, the United States has also modified its visa renewal policy. Effective immediately, USA has reversed a Covid-era relaxation that allowed travellers to renew their visas without an interview if their previous visa had expired within the last 48 months.

What’s Changed?

  • Previous Rule (Post-November 2022): Applicants could renew their US visa without an interview if their previous visa expired within the last 48 months.

  • New Rule: The eligibility for an interview waiver has been reduced to just 12 months. This means that travellers whose visas expired more than 12 months ago will now be required to schedule an in-person interview.

How Does This Impact Travellers From India?

This change is expected to increase the number of applicants needing in-person interviews, which will likely result in longer wait times for visa appointments. With more people now needing to attend interviews, the already lengthy queues are expected to stretch even further, making the process more challenging for many applicants.

The updated DS-160 policy and the change in the visa renewal process in India are part of the US Embassy's ongoing efforts to manage the high demand for non-immigrant visas. Applicants are advised to carefully follow the new procedures to avoid delays and ensure they meet the updated requirements for scheduling their appointments. As visa wait times continue to increase, being well-prepared and adhering to the new rules will help streamline the process.
