The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, in partnership with Starscapes, India's leading astro-tourism company, hosted the fourth chapter of Nakshatra Sabha, India's first-ever astro-tourism campaign, in Takula, near Nainital.

The event attracted over 100 participants from across India—including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Dehradun—and international visitors from the Netherlands. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Takula, a location known for its clear winter skies and stunning view of the Milky Way, the event delivered a one-of-a-kind immersive astronomy experience.

Participants delved into Nainital's cultural and astronomical heritage, learning local folklore about the stars and the origins of the region's iconic lake. Highlights of the event included a guided night hike featuring Indian mythology-infused constellation stories and a memorable camping experience beneath deodar trees. Telescopes provided close-up views of celestial wonders like the Andromeda Galaxy, nebulae, and planets. Attendees also participated in astrophotography sessions, capturing the night sky's beauty.

Adding an academic touch, Prof. Ankit Sule, Associate Professor at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, delivered an engaging talk on the significance of Nakshatras in ancient calendars and early civilisations.

The program also included a visit to the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) Observatory, where participants explored its state-of-the-art facilities, including the 104-cm telescope used in groundbreaking astronomical research.

Meanwhile, Sachin Kurve, Secretary of Tourism and CEO of Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, shared his insights: "Nakshatra Sabha is shining a spotlight on Uttarakhand's untapped dark sky locations, from George Everest in Mussoorie to Takula, Nainital. These events are redefining how travellers engage with our state's natural beauty and heritage."

What's Next?

The Takula event was the final edition of 2024, with future editions set to focus on Messier deep-sky objects. The Nakshatra Sabha campaign, running until mid-2025, will visit more dark-sky locations across Uttarakhand, including Kartikswami, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh. A mix of on-ground events and virtual seminars with astronomy experts promises to keep the momentum going.
