In anticipation of the significant passenger rush during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals this October, Indian Railways has announced the temporary suspension of platform ticket sales at 15 major stations across Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat to obviate unnecessary rush and crowding. The step not only aims to manage overcrowding but also ensure passenger safety with unhindered proceedings in what is one of the busiest travel phases for the country each year.
The suspension will be in effect until October 28, 2025, at the following stations:
Delhi Zone:
New Delhi Railway Station
Delhi Railway Station
Hazrat Nizamuddin
Anand Vihar Terminal
Ghaziabad
Mumbai Zone:
Bandra Terminus
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)
Dadar
Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)
Thane
Kalyan
Panvel
Gujarat Zone:
Vapi
Surat
Udhna
The suspension is part of a broader strategy to control footfall on platforms and ensure smooth boarding and deboarding processes during the festive season. Notably, last year’s Diwali rush at Bandra Terminus led to a stampede that injured nine people, underscoring the necessity of such preventive measures.
Even though the general public will be prevented from purchasing platform tickets during this period, exemption will be made for individuals coming to aid vulnerable passengers. This exemption includes senior citizens, women, specially-abled citizens, children and those requiring momentary special care. Railway authorities have appealed to the passengers to comply with the regulations and plan their journeys in accordance and cooperation with staff to maintain order within the crowd.
Northern Railway has finished building a permanent holding facility at New Delhi Railway Station in anticipation of the increased passenger demand. This facility, which is close to the Ajmeri Gate, can transport up to 7,000 persons at once, allowing for easier mobility and less traffic.
Passengers are advised to adhere to safety protocols and avoid carrying restricted items, such as firecrackers and other inflammable substances, on trains and within railway premises. Violations can result in penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
Indian Railways has also introduced special services to manage the surge in passenger numbers and ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience during the festive season.
For more information and updates, passengers are encouraged to visit the official Indian Railways website or contact the nearest railway station.
