Helsinki, the Finnish capital, has reached a new milestone in its sustainability journey. On March 4, the city was awarded the prestigious Green Destinations GSTC certificate, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable tourism, states a Helsinki-based news wire agency. Notably, Helsinki is the first city with a population of over half a million to achieve this significant certification.

To earn this recognition, destinations must meet the rigorous standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which oversees demanding sustainability criteria in the tourism industry. With over 280 criteria covering environmental, cultural, social, and economic aspects of sustainability, Helsinki has demonstrated full compliance, reaffirming its commitment to responsible tourism practices.

Established in 2007, the GSTC criteria were developed in collaboration with prominent international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Rainforest Alliance.

Finland Strives For Sustainability

By adhering to these standards, Helsinki joins an elite group of global destinations committed to sustainable travel practices. It serves as a clear indicator of the city’s dedication to meeting global sustainability goals.

"The achievement of this certificate is a major milestone. It highlights Helsinki's unwavering commitment to promoting sustainability in every facet of its tourism industry," says Nina Vesterinen, Tourism Director at the City of Helsinki.

Helsinki’s sustainability efforts have been long in the making. The city's ambitious goal, outlined in its 2021 strategy, is to become the world’s most sustainable travel destination. With the top position in the Global Destination Sustainability Index secured in autumn 2024, Helsinki is rapidly approaching this goal.

"Finland has been recognised as the happiest country in the world for seven consecutive years. Helsinki, in particular, has long been a pioneer in sustainable urban development. This certification is the result of years of hard work by the city's authorities and the travel industry," Vesterinen adds.

Helsinki’s focus on sustainability extends to all sectors of its tourism industry. Most of the city’s hotel rooms are environmentally certified, and its tourist attractions, conference venues, and other facilities are recognised globally for their commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

In addition to its local efforts, Helsinki’s achievement is particularly timely as the European Union prepares to implement stricter regulations on environmental claims. With new rules aiming to combat misleading greenwashing, certifications like the Green Destinations GSTC and the Global Destination Sustainability Index are crucial in ensuring that environmental claims are both accurate and transparent.

"Helsinki is committed to proving the authenticity of its sustainability work, which is why certifications like these are so important," says Vesterinen. "The new EU regulations will make it even more vital for destinations to back up their sustainability claims with verified and transparent evidence."

Helsinki’s recent certification is a testament to its leadership in sustainable tourism.
