If safety is one of the biggest factors shaping your next holiday, the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) has some good news. Despite rising conflicts across the world, several countries continue to stand out for their stability, low crime rates, and peaceful societies.
Released annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the Global Peace Index ranks 163 countries and territories based on their overall peacefulness. The 2026 edition marks the report's 20th year and signals that global peace has declined for the 12th year in a row.
The report comes at a time when governments are expanding travel advisories as conflicts continue in different parts of the world. While the rankings are not a substitute for official travel advice, they offer a useful snapshot of which countries remain among the safest places to visit.
Global Peace Continues To Decline

This year's report says the world is facing more active conflicts than at any time since the end of the Second World War. Ongoing wars in Sudan and Ukraine, along with the recent conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, have further worsened the global security situation.
Overall, 99 countries became less peaceful over the past year, while only 62 improved. In fact, 119 countries are now less peaceful than they were when the index was first published in 2008.
Western and Central Europe continue to be the most peaceful regions in the world. Meanwhile, South Asia recorded the sharpest decline this year, driven by worsening conditions in Nepal and Pakistan.
Where Does India Rank?
India slipped three places to rank 127th out of 163 countries, with a score of 2.409.
According to the report, the decline was driven by increased tensions along its borders with Pakistan and Myanmar, along with continuing ethnic violence in Manipur. Bhutan remains South Asia's most peaceful country, ranking 16th globally.

New Zealand moved up to second place this year. Low violent crime, transparent governance and its distance from many global conflict zones continue to work in its favour.
1. Iceland (1.161)
Iceland has held the top spot for 19 consecutive years. With no standing army, very low crime rates and high levels of social trust, it remains the world's most peaceful country.
What Does This Mean For Travellers?
The Global Peace Index measures a country's overall level of peacefulness rather than the safety of individual tourist destinations. It does not account for factors like petty theft, road conditions, weather events or localised risks.
Still, the rankings offer a useful starting point if you're planning an international trip. Before travelling, it's always a good idea to check the latest government travel advisories along with destination-specific guidance.
