A multinational team of specialist divers has successfully brought out the first of five gold prospectors who were trapped inside a flooded cave in Xaisomboun province, Laos, after heavy rainfall cut off their exit route. The seven-man group entered the cave on May 20. Five were found huddled together on May 27, while two remain missing.

Inside The Xaisomboun Cave Incident

  • The group: Seven people entered a narrow, winding cave system in central Laos in search of gold ore, with some also believed to be hunting in the surrounding area.

  • The flooding: On May 20, sudden and intense rainfall triggered flash floods, rapidly raising water levels inside the cave. The surge cut off the only known exit, leaving the group trapped around 300 metres inside the system.

  • The conditions: The cave is regarded as particularly hazardous, with tight, submerged passages that are difficult to navigate even in normal conditions. Rescuers also noted the added risk of toxic gases, believed to be linked to bat droppings within the cavern.

Rescue Operations

  • The discovery: After a week-long search effort, rescue divers located five of the trapped men on May 27. The group was found together, alive, deep within the cave system.

  • The extraction: On May 29, a multinational rescue team—comprising divers from Thailand, Australia, Japan, France, Indonesia, and Malaysia—successfully brought the first survivor, a 23-year-old man, to the surface.

  • The challenges: The evacuation required navigating long stretches of partially flooded, tightly confined tunnels. In some sections, conditions were so restrictive that rescuers had to carefully guide the weakened miners through on hands and knees.

Current Situation Underground

  • Survivors: The first man was guided out of the cave after about 37 minutes of slow movement through tight, partially flooded passages. According to a diver involved in the operation, four more men trapped in a flooded cave in Laos have been rescued after managing to walk and crawl their way out with the assistance of rescue teams.

  • The missing: Two members of the original group have not yet been located, and search teams remain inside the system trying to trace their whereabouts.

  • Weather conditions: Ongoing heavy rain and thunderstorms are adding pressure to the operation, with fears that water levels inside the cave could rise again and further restrict access routes.

Caving, or cave exploration, needs proper preparation and a strong focus on safety. The recent flooding in Laos, where sudden heavy rain filled underground passages and left a group stranded deep inside, shows how fast conditions underground can change and turn dangerous.

Check weather conditions: Never enter a cave if rain is forecast. Even distant rainfall can cause flash flooding underground, rapidly cutting off exits and leaving no safe route out.

Never cave alone: Always explore in a group, ideally three to four people or more. If someone is injured, one person can stay with them while others go for help.

Leave a clear plan: Tell someone you trust exactly where you are going and when you expect to be back. Agree in advance on when they should raise the alarm if you don’t return on time.

Carry reliable lighting: Take at least three independent light sources per person. Don’t rely on a phone or glow sticks. A helmet headlamp is essential, along with spare batteries kept dry in waterproof storage.

Wear appropriate equipment: Use strong, non-slip boots and dress in layers suited to cold, damp conditions. Avoid cotton as it stays wet and heavy. Gloves, knee pads and elbow pads can also help protect you in narrow or rocky sections.
