A long layover at an airport usually means finding a charging point, checking the departure board and settling into a gate-side seat. At Dubai International Airport (DXB), travellers can do something rather more active this week: take a walk through one of the world's busiest airports.

On Friday, August 14, DXB will host a community walk as part of Dubai Mallathon, the citywide fitness initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The event will bring movement and social connection into the airport experience, giving passengers a chance to stretch their legs while waiting for or between flights.

A Walk Between Flights

The walk will take place at Terminal 3, Concourse B, across two sessions from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM and 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Travellers can choose between a 1.5-kilometre or 750-metre route, depending on how much time they have before their next flight.

The event is open to guests of all ages and abilities, including passengers transferring through DXB, alongside Dubai Airports employees and members of the oneDXB community. Participation is free and no advance registration is required. Travellers simply need to make their way to the Family Zone near Gate B28 and join the walk.

For passengers accustomed to measuring airport time in minutes until boarding, the initiative offers a different way to use those spare moments. Rather than spending an entire connection seated at the gate, travellers can fit some movement into their journey without leaving the terminal.

Bringing Wellbeing To DXB

The airport walk is part of Dubai Mallathon, a broader summer initiative designed to encourage residents and visitors to remain active during the hotter months. At DXB, the concept has been adapted to one of the city's most fast-moving environments, where millions of international travellers pass through each year.

The timing also reflects the growing emphasis on wellbeing during travel. Airports are traditionally associated with long periods of sitting, whether at check-in, security or departure gates. A short walk can offer travellers an easy opportunity to move between stages of their journey, while the community format adds a social element to what is often an individual experience.

DXB's scale makes the setting particularly distinctive. The airport welcomed a record 95.2 million guests in 2025, making it the busiest year in its history and the highest annual international passenger traffic recorded by any airport. Against that backdrop, a community walk becomes a small but visible addition to the passenger experience.

More Than A Transit Stop

The initiative also reflects Dubai Airports' wider focus on making time spent at its airports more engaging for passengers. Rather than treating a connection simply as time between flights, the walk creates an opportunity for travellers to pause, move and interact while remaining within the airport.

DXB is operated by Dubai Airports, which also manages Dubai World Central (DWC), also known as Al Maktoum International Airport. DWC is being developed as Dubai's long-term aviation hub, with expansion plans announced in 2024 involving an investment of USD 35 billion. Over the next decade, the airport is expected to accommodate up to 150 million passengers annually, with plans eventually targeting capacity for 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo.

For now, however, the focus at DXB is considerably more immediate. On August 14, travellers passing through Terminal 3 can trade a few minutes at the gate for a walk, a little exercise and a chance to experience one of the world's busiest airports from a different pace.
