Celebrating Responsible Tourism In Gujarat: Highlights From IRTSA 2025
Responsible tourism took centre stage in Gujarat with the inaugural Indian Responsible Tourism State Summit & Awards—Gujarat Chapter, held on February 22, 2025. Set against the backdrop of the vibrant Rann Utsav at Tent City, Dhordo, the event brought together changemakers, industry leaders, and grassroots innovators shaping the future of travel. The awards honoured individuals and businesses redefining travel in India—thoughtfully, sustainably, and with deep respect for local communities and ecosystems.
Organised by the Outlook Responsible Tourism Initiative and presented by Gujarat Tourism, the event recognised individuals and enterprises transforming travel through sustainability, conservation, and community-led initiatives. Held alongside the Indian Responsible Tourism Summit & Awards (IRTA) 2025, an annual event that honours, celebrates, and empowers those championing responsible tourism in India, the awards highlighted the industry's commitment to a more sustainable future.
Dr. Rajender Kumar, IAS, Secretary for Tourism, Government of Gujarat, attended as the Chief Guest, reaffirming the state’s commitment to responsible tourism. He highlighted key initiatives, including plastic-free measures at the Rann Utsav and government-community collaborations that prioritise environmental conservation, local livelihoods, and enriching visitor experiences.
The keynote address by Dr. MK Ranjitsinh, author and chairman of the Wildlife Trust of India, set the stage for thought-provoking discussions. He highlighted Gujarat's rich wildlife and emphasised that tourism must contribute to conservation efforts, as preserving wildlife is integral to responsible tourism.
The event provided a platform for inspiring stories of individuals promoting responsible tourism in Gujarat. It showcased the remarkable work of Shivam Tiwari, a naturalist whose CEDO Homestay for Birders has become a sanctuary for avian enthusiasts, and Krutarthsinh Jadeja, who has seamlessly woven heritage and hospitality together at Devpur Homestay.

Folk musicians from Dhordo village delivered soul-stirring performances of Sufi songs, Kabir Vani, and traditional folk tales, weaving the region’s stories through melody. The exquisite Lippan art décor, a tribute to Kutch’s renowned artisans, transformed the venue into a celebration of Gujarat’s rich cultural legacy.
With over 200 national and state award winners, an impact on 10,000+ businesses, and partnerships across 20+ states, the Outlook Responsible Tourism Initiative continues to expand, amplifying diverse voices in the sector. By introducing the State Awards, the initiative aims to empower small business owners, entrepreneurs, and cultural custodians in every district, ensuring that responsible tourism evolves from a niche idea into a mainstream movement.
This event sets a benchmark for other states, reaffirming that the future of travel must be inclusive, ethical, and environmentally responsible.
