Owing to the increase in number of Covid cases across the country, the Border Security Force has decided to suspend the entry of public at the Wagah border in Amritsar. Previously, huge crowds gathered on both sides of the border in order to cheer on the marching soldiers for the &lsquoBeating Retreat&rsquo or the lowering of flags ceremony.

According to sources, the BSF statement read, &ldquoIn view of the Covid-19 situation in the country and latest guidelines issued from the office of the district magistrate, Amritsar, BSF authorities have reviewed the situation and taken a decision to stop the entry of public to witness the &ldquoRetreat Ceremony&rdquo at JCP Attari with immediate effect.&rdquo

The retreat ceremony had only been resumed a few months ago &mdash in November 2021 &mdash after it was initially suspended in March 2020 due to the coronavirus scare. Keeping in the mind the surge in the number of cases, especially with the newer variant Omicron, the parade at the military outpost will not be witnessed by visitors.

An elaborate and vigorous display of zeal and glory, the parade was a highlight for all travellers coming to Amritsar. The parade generally takes place right before sunset where in soldiers across both the borders lower their national flags for the day in perfect symmetry.
